Hi everyone! My name is Beth and I am the one attempting to create beauty out of chaos around here! Sometimes I even create chaos out of beauty :). Either way, I love to share my DIY home stories with all of you! [Read More …]

Craft Closet and Rolling Craft Cart
August 19, 2009
From Eek to Chic
Before After
*Sigh*. I’m in love. I find myself opening the door so that I can simply gaze upon its beauty. All of the neat little cubbies, the colors, the adorableness of it all makes me want to never leave. (Hint: For those of you trying to figure out if the letters spell anything, try reading the pink buckets across first and then the white buckets second.)
In fact, if you come over to my house you might just find me hanging out in the closet. I love it in here. I think I could live in here. If someone brought me food every now and then, it would be totally doable. I dare say that as much as I’m in love with this closet I’m even more in love with my creative hubby who helped me design this gorgeous-organized-wonder! I’m sorry ladies, but my man is simply amazing. He Hates (capital H intended) anything involving home improvement. This was a true labor of love.
I will take you on a ridiculously detailed tour of these beauties because 1.) I can and 2.) you might just want to steal borrow some of these ideas! Let’s start with my rolling craft cart shall we?
I like to work at my kitchen bar. The granite if forgiving of my glue mishaps and I can referee my munchkins better from the kitchen. I suggested to hubby that we get rid of all pots and pans and convert the kitchen to a craft room. Hubby rebutted with the idea of a rolling craft cart. I do like to eat, so this wasn’t a completely unreasonable idea. So I scored an old sewing table for $10 at a thrift store and gave her a fresh coat of heirloom white. Hubby gave her casters, a new interior shelf, and hinged a piece of MDF where the sewing machine used to be. To add more cubby space, I cut an old shoe organizer (which previously was hanging in my closet) in half and attached it to the sides with furniture tacks.
I drilled two holes in the MDF, spray painted it heirloom white, added a little fler de lis, and then attached a ribbon pull. A regular pull/knob would have interfered with the table closing so this was the best option. (I borrowed this idea from someone’s recent post, so if it was you please let me know and I’ll link back to you!)I load up all my goodies inside my craft cart and roll her on over to my work station. Attention: Please notice how the tole tray I just picked up thrifting perfectly matches the paisley shoe organizer! Love it when that happens. Now let’s make our way over to the closet. First stop is Gutter Alley. Those shelves holding all my lovely scrapbook paper were made from a $5 gutter! Simply cut with a hacksaw, drill holes in the back and secure to the wall with anchors and screws. You can spend extra money on special brackets if you desire, but we wanted to keep this cheap. But Beth, won’t your paper bend and fall out all over the place? Such party poopers. Yes, it might. If it does, I will buy cheap curtain rods and attach towards the top of each shelf. It hasn’t moved yet, so I’m hoping it will behave. One large piece of MDF was purchased for $10 and cut into 3 pieces (way cheaper). The pegboard was $3 and is attached to the top-shelf bracket with beading wire. I was impatient and didn’t want to wait for hubby to figure out how to drill it around the brackets. I use beading wire for everything. It’s fantastic.
The cute buckets came from Target’s dollar section and the ribbon holder is an old cheapo curtain rod that was previously being used as a weapon by my boys.
Is it just me or do mason jars filled with lovelies make your heartbeat faster too?
And what about little brown paper gift tags hanging from twine? I heart them.
*Sigh* I need to get off the computer so that I can get something to eat. I think I’ll dine in my closet tonight. Feel free to join me.

I can see why you are so excited. If I had a craft space I'd be excited too. I love yours.
Someday soon I'll post about my solution to this problem. It's not a total solution like yours in but a temp one. Thanks for stopping over for a visit. ~ ~Ahrisha~ ~
Beth~ You did a fantastic job of transforming the sewing table into your craft cart! I like how you left the wood finish on the underside of the lid and then painted the rest of table white. Cute addition of the decorative hinged lid to access the interior. Your entire space is so neat and clean. Do ya think it will stay that way? It wouldn't for me- I'm a little messy w/my crafts. *big grin* Thanks for e-mailing me your blog post link and letting me see the end result. You are just too fast!!! Sue
Oh come ON!!! Are you KIDDING me? I'm in love. Absolutely fantastic, my friend! You have knocked this one out of the park! I was JUST looking at those gutters for some books in my kids' rooms. They aren't wobbly? As for the craft paper…if it starts falling, why not just extend a piece of elastic across them to keep them in place? You could probably just do a little screw thingy on each side. I'll bet it would be cheaper than a curtain rod. Just a thought. This is your thing, for sure! You're brilliant!
Awesome. Totally jealous, especially since I don't have an inch of closet space to dedicate to crafts. I'm cooking up an idea for a project area in that extra nook in our kitchen… we'll see.
I just hope your doing all that modge-podging outside of the closet! That stuff is potent.
Wow, you did SUCH an awesome job! I've been putting off getting all my crafts/sewing/scrapbook stuff organized (long story short – I just finished up cancer treatment this past June, then had a graduation party for our son right after so NOW I finally have time!) – so I thank you for the inspiring ideas to get my act together!
What is it about a craft room that makes us girls swoon. I have been working hard on mine too and my Love is starting to complain that I am always up in the attic. Love your ideas for doing a lot with a tiny space!
Amazing craft space. I would love to have a special space like that for my crafting. The rolling cart is genuis. Love the use of the shoe organizer. Love it. Oh, and yes, jars filled with goodies definitely makes my heart beat faster! : )
LLLLOooovvve everything about it!!!! I've been wanting hubby to hang peg board in my craft room for 2 years!! I just showed him yours….he goes,"oh. I can do THAT!"!! Thanks for your inspiration!!
Love your dining room-uh I mean craft closet. That came out so amazing. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. This is my first time to your blog but I am adding you to my home spun friends (other wise known as a Blog roll) will become a friend and hope you come over and do the same. I also started a new KNOCK OFF KNOCK OUT party and I bet you have some things to put in the party-it's every Monday. Cheri Its So Very Cheri
I love it! I actually have to use my coat closet for coats & other stuff, but I will make it happen somewhere else. Thank you for the inspiration, and yes, I might have to "borrow" some ideas, hehe.:)
Bravo! Great job! It really is a beautiful space. I will confess that personally I am very anti-craft because you accumulate so much "stuff", but if I could keep it that organized I may consider it. I am not OCD in organizing by any means, but I am obsessed with throwing things out. The opposite of a horder/pack rat. If I don't have a "regular" use for it, it gets tossed. I may need counseling.
Beth, I'm so excited for you!! Your new space looks awesome! Its so organized and I love the peg board. I really need to get something like that for my office. Wish I had everything more "out" so I could see it all and have more inspiration…instead of having to dig through a bunch of drawers.
I popped in from Kimba's linky party, and although I hardly ever comment, I'm too awed to stay silent! The rolling craft cart is clever, and the gutter wall is pure GENIUS. Thanks for sharing so we can steal, I mean borrow, your ideas.
oh WOW! So jealous! I just picked up an old sewing table from the thrift store the other day-what a great idea!! If I were you they would have to tie a string around my ankle and pull me out when someone needed me. GREAT JOB!
WOW!! I love your craft closet too! I've been pondering getting my craft stuff organized. You've given me some great ideas to steal…ummm, I mean borrow! Thanks for the inspiration. I'm new to blogging and participated in Kimba's DIY Day as well.
This is totally awesome! I've got a craft room (due to an empty nest now) but everything is still in disarray. You have some fantastic ideas and the way you write is a hoot.
What an incredible transformation! I'm so glad I started folowing your blog so I could see this! I am always on the hunt for a cheap sewing table, but I can never find them for less than $50! You are an inspiration, thanks for sharing!
Lovely! I like the wall color and your ribbon collection. I also hang my ribbons on an old cheapo curtain rod, but your gutters got me thinking that maybe I could set them in a gutter instead. I use so much ribbon, then I have to take all the rolls off just to take of the empty cardboard. If I set the ribbon spools in a length of gutter, it would eliminate both that problem and the problem of the rolls unrolling themselves on the curtain rod. Thanks for the inspiration!
This closet is GENIUS! The best part is that I have gotten to visit it in person. Thanks for having us to stay Beth. It was such a wonderful time with you all and I hope that it isn't 2 years more before we see you again!
I'm getting ready to redo my craft room/office and this makes me want to do it NOW!! I have a sewing table like the one you show here and I love what you've done with it. So creative! You can check out some of my own personal projects on my blog or head on over to threesimplegirls.blogspot.com where some friends and I share all kinds of tips!

Super craft station! The sewing machine table is amazing!
The idea of the shoe organizer on the desk is pure genius! Mind if I borrow your idea?
Lovely! I like the wall color and your ribbon collection. I also hang my ribbons on an old cheapo curtain rod, but your gutters got me thinking that maybe I could set them in a gutter instead.
