I’m here today to share my insides of my recent Master Bedroom makeover and how I incorporated an office space within the bedroom.
Whether you’re a renter or a homeowner, you may not always have the desired space or rooms in your home available for dedicated work spaces like an office. We own a three bedroom home and all three rooms are being used as bedrooms so we didn’t have a room we could dedicate to such a space.
To make the most of the real estate in my home I made a dedicated area in our master bedroom as an office space. I created a plan how to optimize a work space area in the middle of a bedroom while making it work as a coherent space. I was also working with a small budget so I had to use the most of what I already had on hand.
By using a desk that had a large surface I am able to maxim the space I have to work and doing multiple projects at once. I wanted a desk that blended in and didn’t draw attention to your eye when you walked in the room so I chose the Vika Desk from Ikea. With the open sawhorse style legs it helps create an open feeling which doesn’t make it feel too cluttered in the room.
However, picking a desk that didn’t have any drawers created a problem with storage of typical office goods. I didn’t have convenient drawers to tuck everything away into. In addition, since the space was right in the middle of our bedroom I didn’t want to have our printer just sitting out on a table right next to the desk.
I used what I had for my work space and realized that my dresser was near my desk it would be a great place to store our printer and other office supplies.
I came up with a design that allowed me to alter the bottom dresser drawer of our Hemnes dresser into a hide-away printer.
I used the drawer above to store things like cd’s, tape, scissors, wires and necessary items to keep nearby.
You can view my how-to for the hide-away printer here.
This really was a convenient way to optimize what I already had in the room and utilize it in a way that was not only functional but didn’t stick out in the coherence of a bedroom.
The second item I DIY’d to create a functional but fashionable piece was an old trunk. After some spray paint, new legs, and installing a hanging folder system, I now had a piece that I could keep all our important papers organized. By placing it at the foot of our bed it created an illusion of a footboard too. You can view my how-to on this filing trunk here.
The last little detail was trying to handle all the wires that happen with an office space and using a desk top. I spray painted a cardboard container I picked up from Michaels and cut a rectangle out of both sides allowing cords to pass through the container. This allowed me to collect the bulk of the wires within the container and eliminate the excess ugliness that wires can create.
The consistent flow of colors and design throughout the room make the space as a whole feel coherent. Subtle changes, like the pattern on the curtains, can off set the desk space as it’s own little area.
I really hope these ideas will help jump start your own ideas to utilize what items you already have it your own home to maximize your space.
A big thanks to Beth again for having me and I would love it if you’d join me at PBJstories and follow along with my other DIY’s and tutorials.

You’re room is so pretty and calming. You’ve given us great ideas for staying organized for sure! Our last home was sooooo small and we had to maximize everything square inch so I appreciate seeing new ideas for smaller spaces.

Great ideas. Love how you hid all the wires and the creative use of your furniture pieces. Wonderful ideas.. even if you have lots of space. I think the idea of a home office is that it should reflect more of the style of the home… than an office. Well done.
