I am a lover of Pottery Barn. It has consistently been a source of home inspiration for me for over a decade and just does not disappoint. I also love everyday fashion. Not high-fashion mind you, but your everyday, off-the-rack, cozy-comfortable-cute kind of fashion. This morning as I was about to begin the arduous task of sanding a coffee table, I thought it would be fun to come up with fall/winter 2013 outfits inspired by Pottery Barn! And let’s face it…designing outfits based on gorgeous Pottery Barn rooms is WAY more fun than sanding a coffee table.
Fashion and design go hand-in-hand, so if you’re good at putting a room together (or at least noticing all the elements in a well put-together room), then you can also be good at putting outfits together. In this post, I’ll take you through my thought process on how I turned 5 rooms into 5 outfits. It doesn’t even involve a magic wand or a bippitty boppity boo! All you need to turn your own room inspirations into outfits are some observation skills and a little creativity. Oh, and money. If you want these outfits to reside in your real closet, rather than just your virtual Pinterest closet, then it may take a little bippitty or at least some boppitty. Boo. (Boo was feeling left out. *wink*)
Look #1: Cozy Snowflake

Aren’t those cream paper snowflakes in the window fun? They were the first thing I noticed about this room and inspired me to choose a gorgeous cream crochet top which mimics the delicate snowflake detail. The denim pillow on the couch inspired the blue jeans and the red leather chairs inspired the shoes and handbag. I love the nailhead trim on the wingback chairs so chose a handbag with some stud trim around the edge. Accessories in a room are just like accessories on your person. Choose those that add pops of color and interest to your design. I liked the chain artwork on the wall (are those mattress coils?) and chose some earrings that reminded me of chain links. I also liked the pattern and texture that the rug brings to the room and chose a basket-weave bangle bracelet to add more texture to my outfit.
Look #2: Green & Cream Pumpkin

This dining room makes me want to pull up a chair and nosh on some butternut squash bisque, with some crusty bread, and some spiced wine. Mmmmmmm…. The room is warm, rustic and charming. All of the wood touches from the walls to the table and chairs influenced my choice in riding boots. I chose a pair that looked like worn leather to mimic the worn feel of the wood. The creamy candles on the table prompted my choice of a cozy blazer. The green pumpkins inspired the shape and color choice for the purse and scarf. And the black touches on the chandelier, ladder, and doors prompted my choice in earrings and cute owl shirt. Hooray for fall!
Look #3: Autumn Harvest

When I plan a room design, I start with my foundational pieces like my furniture and rug and build from there. The same is true when planning your outfits. The cream couch above inspired my choice in pants, and the rug inspired the cream and brown shirt. The brown velour toss pillow in the center of the sectional was the inspiration behind my velvet coat. We use toss pillows to add color and bling to a room design and the same can be said for purses and clothing accessories. I chose the brown floral purse for my outfit based on the brown floral pillows in the room. Can you guess what room element inspired my choice in shoes? The shoes were inspired by the color of the vases and the middle toss pillow on the sectional. See? You’re getting good at this! Okay, let’s try another one. What do you think inspired the chevron bracelet? It was actually inspired by the pattern on the small pumpkin. Are you getting the hang of it? Let’s try another.
Look #4: November Rain

The color palette in this soothing kitchen is beautifully simple as is my outfit design. At this point in the game, I am guessing that you can easily spot the inspiration for my shirt, pants, and shoes, but how about the rest of the outfit? The trench coat was inspired by the gorgeous “dip-dyed” appearing urn. My earrings were chosen based on the chrome and white pendant lights. The scarf was inspired by the greenery and the blue utensil jars and the purse was actually inspired by the antique metal scoops hanging on the island. Every detail in one design can inspire every detail in another!
Look #5: Peaceful Glam
