I am helping a friend (M) plan her twins first birthday party. And by helping, I mean that I am telling M that all of her own ideas are simply wonderful. She is incredibly capable, but when you’re a momma of four small children sometimes you just need a girlfriend to bounce ideas off of. I thought you might like to join us in the party planning. The above is a sample invite I made using some of M’s ideas.
The paper products (Birthday Express): M stated at the onset that she wanted cupcakes, cocktails, and polka dots. How fun are these paper products she found that incorporate two out of the three things in her theme? (And honestly, I would be a bit concerned if Birthday Express had mixed drinks on their party products for 1-yr-olds. Two out of three seems rather appropriate considering! 🙂 M has boy/girl twins, so she’ll be using a fun mixture of the pink and blue.
The centerpieces (also Birthday Express): Aren’t these pinatas adorable? They’ll be placed on polka dot tablecloths to be used as a focal point. They can also work double duty as party favor fillers later on.
The activities:
Design your own cupcake bar. With toddlers this could get messy, but I think kids will adore this activity.

Bake your plush cupcakes (Birthday Express)…
…in this vintage Pottery Barn kitchen. (Yes, she owns this complete set. I know! I want to play in it too.) I suggested M move her PB kitchen outdoors and let the kiddos bake up a storm. Yes, she will more than likely be regretting this decision later on when she’s scrubbing real cupcakes off of everything, but the kiddos will LOVE it!
Pin the candle on the cupcake (Birthday Express). We both agreed this was just too cute.
And a few moonbounces to top off the fun! Because, you know, the party isn’t fun enough already. Oh how I wish I was a kid these days. Don’t you?

The Food:
Snacks served in muffin liners. She has about one-gazillion people coming to her party, so tins aren’t really an option. (Aside: Did you know that there are Muffin Tin parties happening in blogland? I had no idea. I think they’re on Mondays if anyone wants to link up and join. How creative!)

These cupcake pops from Bakerella are almost too cute to eat. Keyword: ALMOST. I think I could manage it!
And now the really FUN part. The cupcakes and cocktails.

So here are some of my ideas:
- Lemon bar cupcakes paired with a Lemon Drop
- Lime cupcakes with cream cheese frosting paired with margaritas
- Carrot cake cupcake w/ cream cheese frosting paired with Bourbon a la Creme
- Apple cupcake/muffin paired with mulled cider
- Cranberry cupcakes/muffins paired with cosmopolitans
- Chocolate cupcakes paired with Kahlua and cream Baileys drinks, Toasted Almond, etc.
- Coconut/pineapple cupcake paired with fuzzy navels or pina coladas
- Red velvet cupcakes served with champagne
Oh my goodness, doesn’t that sound fantastic? Someone please host one of these parties and invite me! There are also several cocktail cupcake recipes floating around the web for those of you who want your drink to be inside your cake. Here is a recipe for Margarita Cupcakes that I would love to try sometime soon.
M wants to keep the cupcakes simple (smart woman), but she wants some type of fun but easy dessert for the adults. I suggested making a drink-themed trifle and garnishing it with some large drink garnishes. Someone always beats you to your best ideas, so I found this image to support my “original” idea.
The party favors: We mustn’t forget about party favors (because the guests haven’t been spoiled enough already just by receiving an invite.) How about these adorable boxes filled with goodies?
Don’t you wish you were invited? I know. Me too. I live too far from M to be able to attend, but I’m hoping she’ll take lots of pictures of the event so we can all live vicariously! Cute. Fun. How many times did I use those words in this post? Too many, but seriously how else do you describe cupcakes and cocktails! I rest my case.
If you like what you see, consider officially following me. And leave me a comment to let me know you’re hear. I’ll chat back!

Your friend deserves a very large drink and many, many cupcakes for surviving the year to celebrate their birthdays! Twins seem fun, but also must be a lot of work! Hope that the party is fabulous!
