My Love Story and the WB’s The Lucky One
I admit it. I am a romantic! My summers are typically filled with watching the kids play on the beach while I indulge in a good “beach read.” And seriously, who makes better beach reads than Nicholas Sparks? Although my husband, Matt, doesn’t share my same level of enthusiasm for romance novels, he is a good sport and patiently listens as I retell a book’s storyline and analyze the plot and characters. Matt has watched The Notebook with me (more than once) and even passed me a tissue or two when needed. I am so incredibly grateful to have a husband who is also my best friend!
I often wonder if we would be together now if I hadn’t volunteered to help him move into his college apartment his senior year. The year was 1996, we were 21, and we had both just returned from working as summer camp counselors at separate camps. He was getting ready to complete his bachelor’s degree and I was bound for grad school in just a few short weeks. Although we were officially “just friends,” our letter writing that summer told a different story. I was deeply in love with Matt, and I hoped he felt the same way!
Here is an excerpt from my diary that recounts the beginning of our love story:
“Tired of cleaning the apartment, we decided to stop for the day and focus on putting together dinner. I wanted some music while we cooked, so I popped in my favorite Dave Matthews CD. Matt’s kitchen is ridiculously small and we kept bumping into each other as we tried to navigate our way around the stove. I could feel my cheeks flush from being in such close proximity. I decided at this point that I definitely needed a cold drink of tea to regain control of my telltale cheeks. As I hurriedly grabbed the pitcher, I dropped it and spilled it all over the floor. I nervously laughed and grabbed a nearby towel to sop up the mess, babbling the whole time like a crazy-girl. Matt calmly knelt down, placed his hands over mine to stop their frenzied cleaning, lifted my chin to gaze into my eyes, and then brought me gently to my feet. I stopped talking and became speechless. He then drew me to himself, placed his hands around my waist, and began swaying in rhythm to the music. We slow danced right there over spilt tea and boiling spaghetti and it was single-handedly the most romantic moment of my life.”
