I am in the midst of reorganizing our master closet and am drowning in shoes. I have a few shoe organizers but none that are working well for me. I came across this ingenious idea for organizing your high heels using decorative crown molding!
(You have to scroll down to find the post “Rack ‘Em Up. It wouldn’t let me grab the post url.)
And here is another slightly more substantial version of the same idea.

Since there is no post to accompany the pin, I’ll share the comment: “Total Cost $20 AMAZING! You will need an 8′ base pine base molding and  an 8′ crown molding plus white spray paint. Wood glue the crown onto the base molding, use a finish nail to hold in place while drying, spray paint white. To install, use two wood screws and screw in to wall studs. Viola!” Sounds easy enough and looks cute to boot! Now I just need to find the space in my closet to implement this idea! How do you organize your shoes in your closet?

I have read all of your comments and at first I thought the same things!!!! So my husband and I went to the store and bought crown molding. We cut, painted and hung 8 of them and I was so excited to hang my hundreds of heals… As I was hanging they would fall off! I never got one row complete because they all fell off. So I found a blog where a lady said she went and bought rubber adhesive stoppers that she put on the trim to keep the shoes on. That worked for maybe five pairs of my shoes.. Don’t waste your time or money… Now I’m 64 dollars in the hole between the molding, paint and stoppers and it doesn’t even work… Also not mention I have at least two dozen holes in my wall and scratches from the paint that I will now have to cover and repaint that wall…

Oh no! That is horrible! Thanks for the update. I wonder if the type of crown used makes a difference at all.

Amazing idea! I may have to do this to my closet!

I did the top one, just the crown molding – and about 10 minutes after putting it up, I hear all the shoes fall off of it, they just slide right off… I tried hanging the molding at an angle, nope… didn’t work, even tried pulling it out an inch or so from the wall giving it more room. Didn’t work there either… So I’ll be going to Home Depot and getting base and crown molding, because that seems like it will hold the shoes way better.
I’m so bothered because I just spent so much time painting these darn things lol. Wish me luck.

Lindsey, I think I might have a solution for you. Years ago I had tons of shoes and a long wall into the main part of my closet. There was no way I could hang clothes on that wall cause the area was too narrow. I ended up using that wall for shoes by buying 1″ x 1″ long wood strips which I then nailed into the studs. I then glued (with rubber cement) skinny foam strips on top of the wood strips. The effect was exactly like the pictures above though without the aesthetic flair. Bottom line is this, I think if you can attach foam strips atop the molding, your shoes will stay put. Hope this helps!

Love the idea, but will glue alone hold the weight of the shoes?

Beth, the 2nd photo is actually of my closet. I uploaded it to pinterest after completing the project based on my inspiration of the 1st photo. I had no idea it would end up being pinned so many times! I just saw it repinned with a link to your blog. Thanks.

HOLY COW! I spent yesterday searching for ideas on pintrest and never came across this! I need to do this so bad! My hubs and I are discussing the idea of opening up our closet and this would be a great way to store my shoes! Thanks for the inspiration!!!

funny, we are a family of five with 32 pairs of shoes total. we just use the things that hang from the pole in the coat closet. the childrens shoes are on the bottom since they are shorter and hubby and i place ours in the higher slots. i do have two pairs of boots but i place those on the shelf so they don’t get trampled when we hang up coats.

One of the most original ideas for storing shoes! I like that they are up where you can see them! Mine are in those shoe organizers, under all my clothes, and I always pull out the same two pairs. Red Puma shoes or Black Puma Shoes. How boring!

Really cute, the top image looks like the shoes might fall off it, the bottom image looks like the shoes might stay on a little bit easier. Because it loses all points with me if it’s not functional, really cute, thanks for sharing!

that is such a great idea!

OMG that is so precious!! I’m definitely going to share this with my teeny tiny closet, NYC sister. Thanks for the idea! Too bad that there wasn’t a post with the pic on pinterest.

Me too! My shoes and boots have taken over my closet and I trip over them every time I enter. I need a better solution! I like the idea of boot hangers but they seem like they take effort…I’m lazy :).
