I have the privilege of being a Lowes Creative Ideas Blog team member. What this means is that each month Lowes Creative Ideas issues our team a themed-project to create on our blogs. August’s challenge was to update your kitchen, September’s challenge was to create some seasonal decor, and this month’s challenge is to create whatever the heck we want! Woohoo! I have so many projects on my DIY wish list. Here are just a few:
I definitely want to add built-in bookshelves to our library/guest room…
I would love to create a newel post for our lower level staircase…
…and my boring hallways are just waiting for some molding or board and batten!
But to do all of these fun projects, the truth of the matter is that I really need a better saw. You see I have had my eye on a compound miter saw for a few years now, but I just couldn’t justify the expense. I own a very old table saw that used to be my dad’s, and I have a hand held miter saw. Between those two saws (and of course my humble little miter box), I’ve been able to chop some wood. However, these two saws are a tad scary to use and honestly I often need Matt by my side for moral support. (You know, just in case I chop off a limb and am dying in the basement without said limb to dial 9-1-1.)
So I decided that this month I was going to do something wild. I was going to spend all of my saved up Lowes gift cards and some saved up cash and buy an investment piece: My first and potentially last compound miter saw! Eek! But how does one choose a great saw amongst so many options?
You ask the experts.
I happen to know several and they go by the names Brittany, Sandra, Emily, Sarah, Cassity, Chris, Donna, Stacy, and Marian. Not too surprisingly everyone had a different opinion. A few girls love their Ryobi compound miter saws. Ryobi is an awesome brand, but alas it’s not carried at Lowes so that was out. Several said that a sliding, dual bevel was the only way to go. A few said a sliding saw didn’t matter but that dual bevel is a must. But do I choose a 10 inch or 12 inch saw? Most agreed that it wasn’t the size that matters but how you intend on using it that counts *wink*. Compound miter saws at Lowes range in price from $120-$800. That is quite a huge price range, so it’s important to consider your budget first and work from there.
When I was on an episode of Craft Wars, I tried out a saw that I LOVED. It had a laser for precise cutting, it slid out towards you for ease of cutting wide pieces, and what I liked best was that it was so simple to change up the angles. I was too involved in my Craft Wars jitters to pay attention to the brand name of the saw, but I was pretty certain it was a Dewalt. Today I took my wad of gift cards and headed to Lowes to talk with more experts and find my dream saw. My Lowes associate, George, was amazingly patient and helpful. He went down the entire line of saws and talked me through the pros and cons of each.
I liked that I could lift this saw and carry it around. It had most of the features I was looking for and it was reasonably affordable. However it wasn’t a sliding saw and it was really difficult for me to change the angle of the blade.
This next one, Hitachi 12-in 15-Amp Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Laser Miter Saw, was almost “the one”. In fact this might seem silly, but what stopped me from getting this one was the position of the handle. I hated it. It felt awkward to pull the saw down, and although I’m sure I could have gotten used to it in time it drove me nutso in the store—so it was out.
The Kobalt 12-in 15-Amp Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Laser Miter Saw was marked down and had almost everything I was looking for! But the vertical capacity was very small for the price. I hope to do molding in the house soon and just wasn’t sure if the vertical clearance would give me what I needed. It was also clunky feeling to me when trying to change the miter angle.
I ignored the nearly $800 saw because it just wasn’t in the budget for me, but this DEWALT 12-in 15-Amp Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw just might be! This saw had everything I was looking for in a saw and more. I could manage all of the handles and knobs easily and it slid like it was on ice. However, that pricetag scared me.
I ran over to the cashier with my 10 months worth of saved Lowes gift cards and had her add them all up for me. Woohoo! I had enough money saved up that if I wanted her she could be mine for a very, very affordable price.
I went for it and am now the proud owner of an amazing saw. Let’s see if I can use it well! I have a small project on my to-do list that I’m going to test the saw out on this week. I’ll report back soon with my review.
And now it’s your turn to have a chance to save (or not save) a Lowes gift card of your very own! Follow the instructions in the rafflecopter widget below in order to enter for a chance to win a $100 Lowes gift card. Good luck!

I have been searching for the perfect bookshelf/case for a small corner in my living room…still not have found “it”. Desiree Siegel says
You are a brave woman. Hear you roar!
Lowes rocks! 🙂
Pine Tree Home says
I’d buy more wood, of course! I am constantly in there and my family knows to get me a Lowes GC for birthdays. I can spend hours looking at all the different types of moldings.
You will love your new saw. Ten years ago I bought a Dewalt and while it doesn’t slide and doesn’t have a laser, it is my BFF. One day when a pile of cash falls into my lap, I’ll upgrade.

I would also love to get a new miter saw! It seems greedy, since I already have TWO regular miter saws, but to tell the truth, both are hand me downs from my father in law, and he has an issue with “safety features” so he disables/breaks off all safety guards. I feel like my life is in my hands, literally, whenever I use one of them! He’s also made some interesting additions, like bolting a piece of 2×4 to one as a fence, etc. Need my own unspoiled compound miter saw!
Cathy says
I know just how you felt!! I’ve wanted one of these for years!! I can always use a gift card!!
Jenny@Evolutionofstyle says
What a timely post! I’m hoping to buy a compound mitre saw myself, since my husband keeps griping that we need a COMPOUND one vs. the one we have now. :-). Yours looks like a dream come true! What has my life come to that I find Lowes such a fun and exciting place to shop? 😉

Yeah this is the CMS that we have, I love it and love most of all that I can move it around the garage without asking for help!
I would love to say that I’d buy something practical for the house but since the hubs has his mind set on “Lighting the Lawn” I’d buy Christmas lights – Lowes has the best kind and colors!
Bonnie says
Wow! You are brave. I have always wanted to learn to use one of those things, but I tend to hurt myself/cause damage whenever I attempt home improvement projects. Two weekends ago, I decided to paint the wainscotting around my claw foot tub and knocked a pipe lose! I flooded half of our bedroom and the master closet before a neighbor came and rescued me. Naturally, my husband was out of town! I ran straight to Lowes and bought one of those professional fans made by Shop Vac and dried everything out before he got home. Lowes rocks!
Lisa D. says
My husband just painted our front door and we’d love new hardware for it, so I’d us the gc for new hardware. I could also use a new foyer light….or we could use it toward backsplash for the kitchen. The possibilities are endless.
Nicole says
A hundred dollar gift to my favorite store!!!! HEAVEN!!! I could easily spend it to tackle my many projects, but I think I would put it towards my bathroom update. Everything in our bathroom is older than I am!

Erin Buchanan says
It’s hard to pin down exactly what I might pick out at Lowes. Possibly some new baseboards and wood so that I can repair my poor sons room. Instead of crating our puppy we just would put him in our sons room when we left. Needless to say he has nibbled and chewed up the entire window frame and had started to munch on baseboards.
Amy says
Oooohhh… So inspired. Bathroom redo is on the list ( or garden stuff if I’m being frivolous)
Catherine says
We have big plans to redo our bathroom, so I would probably splurge on a sink or just do some paint. Thanks for the chance!

I would definitely buy a jigsaw. I have a lot of tools, but for some reason, this is the one that has not made it into my shopping cart. I’m always borrowing one from my wonderful friend who’s a contractor.
Suzan says
When I moved from the west coast to the east coast, the miter saw stayed behind. Oh, how I miss it! A Lowe’s card and a couple of gift cards at Christmas from my kids and I could have a new one! Thanks for the opportunity!!
Sharon Adams says
It would be a tough call for me to pick out only one thing, But, If I did have to pick out one thing it would be a jig saw, The old one I have have seen it heyday!. Otherwise… Lowes has so many goodies !, I love the great lighting collections that they feature, paint too, Yes, and Plants, Christmas decor, work gloves…etc., etc., etc.. Thank You for the chance!
Bonnie says
My nearest Lowes is 90 minutes away. It just happens to be in the same city where I had to go get an aftermarket XM radio adapter put in my car. When the guy at the shop asked me if I wanted to get dropped off at the mall while they worked on my car, I replied “No. Drop me off at Lowes.” He looked at me funny & asked “Are you sure? It’s going to be almost 2 hours.” Not a problem for me. 🙂
So … after yesterday my wishlist is super-duper long.
Lisa O says

Kellie Herget says
I would actually buy a miter saw too. My husband needs one to finish our basement.
Charlie says
I’m ready for a Kreg Jig. I just built some desks for my girls, and it would have been so much nicer if I’d had one then. I was able to work around it, but I know the quality would have been much better with the jig.
And just a thought for those who don’t have $599 for their first compound sliding miter saw…I bought the Kobalt 7″, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It’s amazing! Has a laser, easy to move around, and since it’s small, I can easily transport it with me to help other friends with their projects (frequent occurrence here). Since it slides, I can easily cut up to 6″ boards with no prob. I rarely use 1×8 +, and if I do, there’s always the table saw or having the wonderful helpers at Lowe’s do it for me there at the store. 🙂
Aloha and thanks for the contest opportunity, Beth!
Charlie
Lynn says
I would use it to buy lumber for all the projects I dream of building, especially a huge farmhouse table. Though with winter coming and my husband wanting to park in the garage, it might have to wait until spring.
