Suffice it to say that 2020 has held a lot of unique challenges for all of us. There are so many things happening each day that are beyond our control. When things feel uncertain, I take comfort in the small things I can do to create beauty around me. This year especially, I find myself gravitating towards all things traditional, nostalgic, comforting, and cozy. Nothing makes me happier than a house filled with beautiful Christmas decor, so when Christmas Tree Shops andThat! asked if I’d like to share an early sneak peek of their traditional holiday collection with all of you, I jumped at the opportunity. Don’t worry, I plan to fully savor each day of pumpkin spice ahead! Just consider this blog post your first-hand preview, “lookbook”, sneaky peek of what we have to look forward to! Shelf Styling Tip 1: Clear everything off of your shelves to create a blank slate.
Storing the same everyday items on your shelves can place you in a decorating rut. It’s helpful to begin with a blank slate by clearing everything off of the shelves and thoroughly cleaning the space. Beginning with empty shelves will help you style even tried and true items in new and creative ways!
Shelf Styling Tip 2: Lay out all of your potential shelf-styling decor items in one spot.
Choose an empty space on the floor, or preferably a table, to lay out items you want to display on your shelves. I simply unpacked all of my sneak peek items from Christmas Tree Shops andThat! to assess what I had to work with. These are products you’ll soon be seeing on the shelves at your local Christmas Tree shop store! I especially love the Christmas pillows and the glass jar lanterns. The Christmas trucks, cheerful signs, and Christmas stockings are also adorable.
Shelf Styling Tip 3: Choose a narrow color pallette to create a cohesive look.
When I order items for styling a particular space, I don’t always know ahead of time exactly how I will be using those items within the space. I choose items within a tight color palette–in this case red, white, green, and black!
For this holiday sneak peek, I wasn’t entirely sure which items I would be receiving but you can see that everything works together! A tight color palette helps to effortlessly pull together a curated and cohesive look.
In the picture below, note how I used the Christmas tree skirt as a throw! It’s okay to think outside the box when decorating.
Shelf Styling Tip 4: Begin placing items on your shelves keeping in mind the micro, medi, and macro looks!
When I style shelves, I consider how the vignette looks on each individual shelf (micro), how the vignettes work together on the shelves as a whole (medi), and how all the shelves look together in the room (macro).
I love to use symmetry when styling. If I place a large object on one side of the shelf, I typically try and balance it with an object of equal height on the opposite side of the shelf. I also like to create “visual triangles” with my objects.
Shelf Styling Tip 5: Add sprigs of fresh greenery to your shelves.
One easy Christmas decorating tip that instantly elevates your decor is to add some fresh greenery to each shelf. If you have evergreen trees in your yard or in woods nearby, clip a few sprigs to use in your Christmas decor. Just a few will make a big difference in your shelf styling! The clippings smell nice, add life, and help faux greenery look fresh.
I like to add a few fresh sprigs of evergreen to faux wreaths.

Thank you for the inspiration. I’m doing red/white this year since I received some adorable red/white decor gifts last Christmas. Can you tell me where you got your bamboo window shades? I have some in my cart at Home Depot now, but they say delivery will be in December. I need them for a Kitchen window that’s only 36″ in height. Thanks!

My shades are from Lowe’s and I bought them in-store three years ago when we first moved in to this home.

Thanks Beth! I love the idea that it really doesn’t take much. I’m going to see what I can find to start Christmas early, even in the midst of all that is going on in the world and in MY world; mainly moving!!
