Have you ever been stumped on how to decorate a room, how to space plan, and/or how to choose the best furnishings for your space? Read on to see this amazing 3D Interior Design room planner in action!
The Room Design Dilemma
Decorating a room typically comes easily to me. I can stare at a space in its current condition and create a fresh design plan and space plan in my mind’s eye. However, this has not been the case with our great room! This room has stumped me since we moved in two years ago. The room has so many doorways and entryways to other rooms in our home that furniture placement is tricky. There is also an upstairs balcony that juts out oddly into the room. Below you can see some very rough “BEFORE” shots of this space.
Although furniture placement has stumped me in this space I knew I wanted to do the following:
- add skylights
- add interest to the walls with molding
- paint the room white
- redo the fireplace mantel and tile
- replace the ceiling fan with a chandelier
- remove the beam shelves from the main wall
This room was dark like a cave and desperately needed more natural light. I recently partnered with VELUX Skylights to add two VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and they are a dream come true! Here is a picture below I took on skylight install day. The skylights only took two days to install and look like they were always meant to be there! If you have a room in your home that could use natural light, I highly recommend looking into VELUX skylights.
The Room Design Plan
When we first moved into this home in June of 2017, I worked with MODSY on a sponsored post for my boys’ bedroom. MODSY is an interior home design service that offers 3D renderings of your space. Their room renderings are fantastic, and I knew I’d pay to use their service again if I ever had a design dilemma. Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes on your space! You can choose different design packages to suit your needs, and I chose the package that allowed me to work one-on-one with a designer. The 3D software also allows you to drop your own furniture and decor selections into your room! I love this option!!
My Potential Room Designs
I was given a few room design options to consider and then I customized the design to better fit the furniture and accessories I already own. I just purchased two Pottery Barn sofas and a fantastic chandelier that I cannot wait to get into the space. I’m also planking the walls in here to give the space more texture and visual interest.
Here are some of the potential designs.
Living Room Design Option 1: By Modsy Designer
I loved the simplicity of the furniture arrangement but didn’t love the sofas. The chandelier is beautiful but doesn’t have the lighting I crave for this space. I love the idea of placing my bar cart and feather prints in the odd corner. I actually own almost identical items already and can copy this look for free.
Living Room Design Option 2: By Modsy Designer
This design is GORGEOUS and has so many elements I love! Cozy elegance is always what I strive for and this space nails it. My only issue with the furniture is that it requires I purchase a lot of items I don’t currently have. I also fear that the room may look too cluttered in person with so much going on. But this design is still a winner in my book and may be something I move towards progressively.
Living Room Design Option 3: My Design
Below is the design I have come up with based on items I already own and some I have ordered. It’s clean, fresh, simple, uncluttered, cozy, and comfy! The two chairs in front of the fireplace may be moved up or even eliminated. They add extra seating but I’m not sure if I need them yet. I’m going to do without them at first and live with the room in a more minimal state before adding furniture.
I’m excited to share this space with you as it progresses! Stay tuned for updates. The planking goes in next week and I’ll be sure to share the process. The fireplace will get a makeover after the plank wall is installed. It will be fun to see this room finally transform into a space we love!
