Beautiful Citrus Outdoor Table Setting
Sometimes I enjoy fussing over an elaborate tablescape, but I mostly enjoy creating a table that is effortlessly elegant! This citrus table could not be any easier to set, making it perfect for a morning brunch party. I have an order to setting the table which might be helpful. Let’s dive into each element on the table!
Order to Set an Informal Table
When I set a basic or casual outdoor table, here is the order I typically place my items onto the table:
- Chargers and/or placemats
- Dinner plates
- Napkins (I often sandwich these between plates but feel free to get creative with your napkin placement!)
- Salad Plates
- Flatware (Fork to the left of plate, knife on the right with blade facing plate, spoon next to knife.
- Glasses (Water glass closest to plate and then wine glasses if using.)
- Specialty items on each plate (more on this later)
- Centerpiece
- Toss pillows, throw blankets, and/or other table decor
Tip: Style your citrus centerpiece and “live runner” last.

Chargers & Placemats
I often use different chargers and/or placemats at the ends of a rectangular table just to add some extra interest. The round seagrass placemats and rectangular jute placemats are a staple on many of my tables! They are like a good pair of khakis and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Dinner Plates
I love to create different looks on the table using different tableware! One of my best table setting tips is to invest in a few beautiful sets of white everyday dishes that you can mix and match with more colorful dishware. I highly recommend the BH&G Carnaby Scalloped White Dinnerware Plates. I’ve owned these for a few years and they remain a favorite!
Napkins & Salad Plates
Besides the centerpiece, napkins and salad plates are two ways I like to add pops of color to the table. My salad plates are from Walmart’s Pioneer Woman collection. Walmart has a ton of beautiful, floral table accessories in this line!
The pink cloth napkins can be found here. While paper napkins are convenient and practical for large gatherings, fabric napkins are eco-friendly and will instantly elevate your table. I always use them for my intimate tablescapes!
Flatware
Flatware adds a shiny touch of bling to the table. This Better Homes & Gardens rose gold flatware is so beautiful and affordable! I love how it complements the pink tones on the table.
Glasses
I love the look of vintage glasses and often search for them in second hand stores or Facebook Marketplace. These vintage-inspired pink glasses from the Pioneer Woman Collection are a fantastic way to get that vintage look!
Dip Bowls
Adding something to the center of each plate, whether it’s a table favor, sprig of fresh herbs, piece of fruit, name card, or dipping bowl helps personalize the table. I used Pioneer Women Dipping Bowls with half of a lemon placed in the center of each setting. The lemon can be used to squeeze in water glasses, or over brunch entrees like smoked salmon or avocado toast.
Creating a Citrus Centerpiece
Creating and positioning my centerpiece lastly allows me to get the exact look I want without the fuss of repositioning other items on the table. While this centerpiece may look like it took a lot of time to prepare, it probably took less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Here is what you will need:
- Cake stand
- Tree clippings from the yard, or improvise with a faux garland like this one.
- Mandarin oranges, limes, lemons, key limes, and grapefruit
- Fresh flowers (I used lavender and rhododendron from my yard.)
To assemble, place your greenery down the length of the table and nestle your cake stand in the center. Cut a few of your citrus fruits in half and assemble on top of the greens. Scatter a few fresh flowers down the greens. On the cake stand, pile some cut and whole fruits. Place sprigs of flowers and greenery into the arrangement until it’s to your liking.
Other Table Decorations: Throw Blankets & Pillows
I often incorporate cozy throws and toss pillows into my outdoor rooms and tables. Here, I added some colorful cushions to my chairs with toss pillows and placemats! Yes, placemats! Using washable braided placemats on chairs is a fun way to soften a hard, or potentially hot metal chair.
