When we purchased our South Carolina home, I was a bit stumped with what to do with the great room. It’s the largest sitting area in the house but it presents with several odd design challenges. I don’t typically have a problem conceptualizing what to do with a space but this one stressed me out! The open concept room has four doorways leading into it making space planning furniture tricky. There is also a balcony overhang which casts shadows and gives the room uneven light and wallspace.
You can get a general idea of what the room looked like BEFORE in these photos below:
Now with skylights, planked walls, and a fresh coat of white paint this room is shaping up to be a much happier space! I recently shared my design plan for our great room in this blog post here, and I absolutely love the general direction of my plan. I like the idea of keeping the main staples in the great room as neutral as possible so that I am able to change out the accessories with my mood. The accessories I chose in my design plan are lovely but felt a little flat. Considering all of the black and white in the open concept kitchen next door, I decided this room could really use a touch more black to make things pop and feel more cohesive.
I went searching for some art inspiration on Walmart.com and found these gorgeous black botanical prints sold by Art.com and fell in love! You all know by now that I am an avid Walmart.com shopper. Walmart offers free 2-day shipping on qualifying purchases (with no membership fees), and they work with numerous 3rd party sellers. I ordered my botanical prints and inexpensive black frames and had them shipped to my door in a matter of days. For in-store products that I might need sooner, I choose the “pick up in store” option. I highly recommend giving Walmart’s online shopping experience a try if you haven’t already! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The botanical art was just the inspiration I needed to springboard the rest of my design. My initial direction for the room was soothing and coastal while this new design feels perfect for late summer and early fall.

There is so much more to do in this room before it’s done, but I’m so excited to have one little corner looking cute!
Here is a better view of how this corner fits into the larger scheme of the space. The rug, couches, lighting and other accessories are ordered but not quite ready yet. I hope you’ll follow along to see the final design!
It always amazes me how a piece of art, or toss pillow, or keepsake can inspire the direction of a room design. If you’re feeling stumped in your own space, take a look at Walmart’s art selection and see what inspires you.
I’ve also rounded up some of my favorite botanical prints for you below! Simply click on the picture to shop the print. Happy decorating!

Beth, I love Walmart as well! These are beautiful prints and you did a great job hanging them in a grid. I know from experience how difficult that can be – getting them just right on the wall.
Love the direction of the room, and look forward to seeing it develop.

Here it is hanging, my kids loved helping hunt down a twig to serve as the hanger after watching me embroider it. You can make one of these in a weekend, only because you need to let the paint dry before you start stitching. It would be easy to switch up the style with different colors or fabric choices! What other words would you put on a pennant ornament?
