My home is 100% inspired. Every room, every paint color, every piece of furniture, every toss pillow, every dish, and every accessory was chosen because of an external creative impulse I had at one time. Granted, I don’t love every detail of my home, and my external creative impulses are evolving each day. There are many things I’d like to change in our home, and there are many things I have changed over the last eight years of living here. But I look back at all of those changes with respect for the creative process involved in fabricating an inspired room. As my style, family’s stage of development, and life circumstances change so does our inspired home!
Let’s take my porch as an example of one of my favorite inspired rooms. We moved into this home in October of 2007, and I started this blog just a few months later in January of 2008. At the time, I was inspired by rich earth tones such as reds, golds, tans, and moss greens. My entire home reflected this color palette, including the front porch. In October of 2008, I wrote a post entitled Autumn’s Color Palette and showed off my newly decorated fall front porch. This was my first time decorating our porch, and I was so proud of how it turned out!
My front door was painted in Benjamin Moore’s Bittersweet Chocolate, but something went awry and it ended up looking purple. I never liked the door color, but I loved the Benjamin Moore Weathersfield Moss with the custom created brick red. This porch was perfectly inspired and authentically reflected my decorating journey at the time. I don’t regret it!
Fast forward to 2014 and 2015 and the interior of my home is currently inspired by coastal blues and grays. I carried our current color palette to the exterior of our home, and it has completely transformed the look and feel of the space. Same space, same designer, evolved inspiration!
As I write this post in October of 2015, here is what it currently looks like outside my front door. I thoroughly enjoy the journey of creating a home I love, and I think you should too!
If you want to learn how to create an inspired home that evolves as you do, then I recommend my friend Melissa from The Inspired Room‘s new book entitled The Inspired Room: Simple Ideas to Love the Home You Have.
I fully resonate with Melissa’s mantra to Love the Home You Have which she discusses at length in her aptly named first book. Melissa describes her new book as a “coffee table book”, but it is so much more than just a collection of pretty photos! (And by the way, the photos in this book are gorgeous! Sometimes I’ve found the paper quality in design books to be subpar, causing the photos to look dull, or slightly off. This is NOT the case with this book. The photos are clear and crisp, and the book is at an amazing price-point for it’s quality and beauty.) The Inspired Room: Simple Ideas to Love the Home You Have teaches you how to create a real-life home on a budget, starting with what you already have. It showcases Melissa’s real-life home with decorating tips that will help you make your house feel like a home.
The official release date for The Inspired Room: Simple Ideas to Love the Home You Have is November 1st but is available for preorder now by following the link. You are also invited to participate in The Inspired Room tour and have the chance to win a $300 gift card to Anthropologie! Lovely view. These tones are quite adorable to ‘work with’ – rich earth tones such as reds, golds, tans, and moss greens… Great. The inspiration is absolutely necessary part in order to develop any of your ideas. Keep up and inspire more people! 🙂
Beth, you have such beatiful style! I can totally relate to an evolving taste. Just when I get done with a room is about the time I realize my taste has changed…at least we will never run out of projects! Both porches are beautiful, too 🙂 thanks for sharing!
Shonee
Thanks Shonee! And yes, the endless list of room-redos continues. 🙂
I love seeing the inspired before and after! I’ve been trying to decide on interior colors and going back and forth between warm tans or brighter whites/grays/aqua. I always thought the warmer colors were more cozy and welcoming. But seeing your dark warm colors and then the brighter white & aqua, I actually think your porch is more welcoming and cheery in the current colors. Thanks for helping me with my decision!
And what color white & what color did you use for the porch floor?
Thanks?
You can find all the exterior paint color names and numbers in this post if you’d like: http://www.homestoriesatoz.com/paint/row-home-exterior-paint.html
Love your new porch design. What color is your door?
Thanks!
Aw, thank you so much, Beth, for sharing about my new book (and for noticing the quality of the paper, too!)! I really enjoyed your post! It is fun to see all the seasons on your porch, it’s always one of my favorites. 🙂 It has so much character and always looks so festive in every season. xo
