Several months ago, I announced that I was going to show off my mudroom reveal! Well, plans for the mudroom sort of changed along the way as we reanalyzed what would work best for our family. I had wanted to transform our tiny entryway (that you can sort of see through the door above) into a more functional mudroom. Right now it consists of a coat closet and a few hooks on the opposite wall. However after analyzing our family’s current behavior, none of us like to de-coat or de-boot in that room. It’s not heated. It’s very tiny. And when we walk through the door we can’t all fit in that room to de-coat. It just doesn’t work.
That room will still be getting a little makeover (bye-bye yellow paint) but it will have to wait. For now, we decided to create a little mud “room” on a small wall that was serving no purpose before. We created a small top shelf and I was able to find some baskets to store our keys, phones, gloves, etc.
When doing our board and batten, we added an additional horizontal board on this wall in order to house more hooks.
The hooks came from Home Depot and I just love the look of them!
The leather ottoman was a Kirkland’s find nearly ten years ago. The top has an adorable leather checkerboard pattern, but I thought I’d add this seat cushion for color and comfort.
I’m thrilled with how it turned out! And of course this is staged for you :). It still looks cute (but not quite as cute) with dirty little boy shoes, school-bus yellow coats, and Mutant Ninja Turtle book bags!
And here is a bonus tutorial brought to you by my 6yr old cameraman! I had several comments from readers stating they were frightened of power tools and didn’t feel confident using a drill. This is a very basic tutorial showing you how to use a drill. Don’t be scared peeps! Seriously, if I can do it, you can do it!

Ever since I first read this post, I’ve wanted to do board and batten with hooks in our tiny back entry. I have finally finished, along with adding some lockers. Thanks for inspiring me! If you’re interested in the result, I’ve posted about it here: http://toaprettylife.blogspot.com/2011/09/mudroom-lockersready-for-accessorizing.html
I am now in love with my new mudroom.

I've been reading your blog for about a year now and I have to say I love it! But today – you made me comment! I just LOVED how your son did your video with you! I am one who isn't afraid of tools (too much!) so I loved the basics of your video – but really – you got yourself a little video guy for sure!!! Thanks for sharing!

Your mudroom space looks wonderful! The way you added the additional horizontal board was pure genius. The hooks really look like they belong there. To tell the truth, though, I think that extra horizontal board would look really good even if it didn't serve the hook-holding purpose. You have the look of cool old-house wainscoting there.
I have those same hooks in my mudroom area. They are great, aren't they? But mine are just attached to a 1×6 board–they don't nearly as cool as yours. Maybe I'll take some inspiration from you and re-do this area in my house!

Its a fabulous update, Beth, looks marvelous! I am loving the sand dollars and starfish accents, very sweet! I think best of all was the informative tutorial, and your son Asher did an EXCELLENT job, especially for only being 6 years old! He's quite good with that camera!

It's so worth waiting to do something to get it just right. We've done so many things and wished they were different in hindsight. Glad this worked for you. It look fantastic. Everyone should have staged pictures of spaces in their home. Actually, maybe I'll take some, and post them around my home as a hint to my family of what it should look like lol.
Cheers

This looks great. I had the same realization in the area I wanted to make a mud room too. It's the laundry room, right when you come in from the garage. I found that we all don't fit in there. We end up coming into the kitchen to take off our shoes and coats and then taking them to the laundry room.
So, I never did make a plan.
I love how your mudroom area turned out. I want my whole house to have board and batten!
Kristy says
So cute!!!

That looks FANTASTIC! I feel like I'm looking at a pic in the PB catalog. And the tutorial is great – "good job" to the camera man! I really like how high your base boards are – did you add to them or were they like that already? You are really good B and B, I always like to see your posts.

Beth, Your new space is wonderful! It looks like something in a Pottery Barn catalog.

Your little mud "room" looks so cute and functional. I forgot to say yesterday how fabulous your board and batten looks!!! Great job, Beth. And great idea to have a drill tutorial. Anyone who doesn't have one, seriously needs one and will find out how easy they make diy projects. I use mine all the time.

Love it! The mudroom turned out terrific! I especially love how you placed the second horizontal board for more hooks vs a more traditional board and batten treatment. Super functional!
And of course little Asher was the ultimate cameraman again. I think all your videos should use him as the videographer. His little voice is just so darn cute and I'm sure he's learning all the DIY tricks along with your readers. Thanks for sharing.

i had asked my husband to move a set of hooks from the kitchen into the laundry room oh.. about a month ago. i was waiting for him to do it so i could take some blogging pictures! anyhoo – i got tired of waiting so i whipped out his dewalt and yelled down the hall "who needs a man?!" and gunned it a couple of times. and then i moved the darn thing myself. so i guess you could say im not scared of threatening the use of the power tools but i was a little nervous to actually put the words in action. i am happy to report all is well except for the two holes left in the wall where the hooks were! 🙂 love the board and batten/mudroom. it looks wonderful! 🙂
Rachel says
That video made me smile. I think Asher did a great job assisting you!
And the mudroom looks great!
Kate @ Chic on a Shoestring Decorating says
It looks fabulous! Straight out of a magazine… nice job!
Wish I had room for a mud room, we have the tiniest hallway that has enough room (barely) for some hooks, no room for shelves or benches or anything cute. Darn. 😉

What a cute video! We have a tiny mud room/back entry. I've thought about doing board and batten with hooks, but then I worried that my kids wouldn't be able to reach them. I like the look of having an extra horizontal piece, and I like the height you chose and the shelf at the top. I'll have to show this post to my husband. Thanks!
Green Door Girl says
Beth – this turned out so good – I just love it – congrats on your new mud "room"/area!
Kelly@imperfect homemaking says
I love this! It is so pretty and welcoming. And I think I have the exact same hooks in my entryway too!
Jemsmom says
You made that little space so functional and cute! You know… Ninja Turtle backpacks and yellow coats are your way of life and that is cute too! Now here in our house, it is Disney princess backpack and pink or purple coat with absolutely no buttons! That is how we roll!

{HEARTS} This looks so great! I miss our mudroom….it was only of the only good things our rental had going for it.
