Flower Arranging Tip 1: Choose your blooms and forage for greenery!
If you are just starting out, I highly recommend choosing no more than two different flowers and some greenery to work with. Keeping a tight color palette and simplifying the arrangement will insure a beautiful end product! For this arrangement, I chose Coral Charm peonies and white stock. I used some clippings from my yard to fill in the arrangement. Foraging for greenery is a great way to cut costs!
Flower Arranging Tip 2: Choose your vessel!
Think beyond the vase when choosing what to place your flowers in. Any container that you can waterproof can hold your flowers! I like to use ice buckets, waste baskets, vintage pails, pitchers, teapots, and baskets. You can use glass vases or jars tucked inside of baskets to create a gorgeous display.
Flower Arranging Tip 3: Hold stem level with bottom of vase and cut at a 45º angle.
To determine where to cut each stem, place your vase on the countertop next to your sink and hold your stem in the sink. Cut each stem at the desired length where it meets the end of the vase. Cutting stems at a 45º angle allows the flowers to get adequate water. Also be sure to use the flower food that comes with your flowers and remove all leaves that fall below the waterline. Clean water helps your flowers remain healthier longer!
Flower Arranging Tip 4: Turn your arrangement 360º to check for holes and symmetry.
Begin with your statement blooms and then fill the rest of the arrangement in with your filler flowers. Greenery can be added first around the perimeter of the vase, or last to fill in any gaps. I do it both ways and both ways produce gorgeous results! Be sure to spin your vase all the way around as you are building your arrangement to make sure there are no obvious holes or gaps. You can fill a hole by either trimming the stems of large blooms so they settle into the void or filling the empty spaces with blooms or greenery. I like to make sure my arrangements look beautiful from all angles!
Flower Arranging Tip 5: Change water frequently and trim stem ends.
For best results, be sure to keep your water as fresh as possible and give the stems a little trim each day!
I had fun styling my blooms for an intimate table for two!
