I was so excited when Cassity from Remodelaholic asked me to be a part of The Good Mood Board Master Bedroom Edition party! This week, several of us will be featuring a master bedroom creation of our own design using Olioboard. (At the end of the post, be sure to click on the links to be taken to the other party participants!)
I have actually been working on revamping my own master bedroom, so working on this project was so much fun! We were asked to use some inspiration pics for our mood board, but I just used the images all stored in my mind as my inspiration :). I also threw caution to the wind and didn’t focus at all on budget; however, I’ll try and suggest some ways to get this look for less!
Below is a screen shot of all of the items I used to create my room. In the second to last row, you can see a thumbnail of what the blank bedroom looked like “before”. I actually inverted the image of the bedroom because I’ve always wanted a hardwood floor ceiling! Pretty cool eh? It’s always good to think outside of the box when you are creating.
I wanted this bedroom to feel coastal, soothing, feminine, current, and elegant. The color palette was inspired by the beach using just neutrals and soft blues in the mix. Tip: If you use just a few soft colors, you are able to have fun with varying patterns and textures to add interest. Â My roman shades and throw pillows are geometric, fun, and trendy without being “loud”. When using an accent color, try and use it at least three times in a room and if it makes a visual triangle all the better. Do you see how the blue on the couch, the blue on the beach painting, and the blue on the bed throw pillows and lamps make a visual triangle? This pleases the eye and balances the feel of the room.
Here is a breakdown of some of the key elements that went into designing this space:
If I were going to try and capture this look for less, I would stencil the roman shades and geometric pillows using the same technique that I used for my stenciled curtains. I would make the chandelier using the wax paper technique that I used for my Christmas tree garland. I would paint the ceiling instead of using hardwood. I would layer cowhide rugs purchased from Ikea, or perhaps even make my own faux cowhide rugs using craft fur from the fabric store. I would paint thrift store dressers to match and spray paint thrift store gourd lamps white. I would use yards of burlap to make my drapes. I would use my sister’s faux shell mirror tutorial to DIY the mirror. Basically, I would just DIY the entire room! Isn’t that what we do best :)?
I hope you enjoyed my design. Be sure to visit Remodelaholic to see her master bedroom creation and for the full line up!

I did an olioboard of my dream living room just before the summer vacation. I loved playing around with it. Lot of work though. Your bedroom looks so beautiful and I love the hardwood ceiling.

Hi, I created my room but I don’t know how to add walls and ceilings. What do you look for, on Olio Boards, to create that? I’m so impressed on how you would take your vision and do it cheaper. Thanks for sharing. Katharine

Hi Katharine,
I found this bedroom by simply typing in “bedroom” in the search bar but if you’re familiar with using Polyvore, Olioboard is exactly the same. You can upload or “grab” an empty room similar to your inspiration room (realtor searches bring up great pics of empty rooms) and go from there. I don’t have a tutorial on how to use Olioboard but I might put one together soon.
I hope that helps some.
