After months in the making, today I am finally sharing my urban farmhouse master bathroom remodel! Back in October, I joined Delta Faucet® in Chicago for A Day of Inspired Design hosted by bloggers John and Sherry Petersik from Young House Love and Delta. Our task was to glean inspiration from an architectural tour of Chicago and translate it into a kitchen or bath design board. I couldn’t believe it when my design was chosen as the winner of a complete bathroom remodel! You can see more from my time in Chicago here.

The Before: Bathroom Functionality Problems
In the nine years we have lived here, I have always disliked our master bath. It is the one room in our home that I’ve wanted to completely gut and start over. This opportunity was a dream come true and allowed me to do just that! Our former bath lacked glamour and felt very builder-grade with several awkward design features I was anxious to change.
My goal for the new design was to expand the shower, increase the vanity storage, add a beautiful stand-alone tub, and create built-in storage.
I also wanted to install a sliding door to free up precious square footage inside the bathroom.
Chicago Architecture Inspiration: Creating the Bathroom Design
The bathroom design board I created during A Day of Inspired Design incorporated architectural inspirations from our Chicago tour. I loved the gorgeous grid windows at the Chicago Cultural Center and originally hoped to implement grid shower doors into my bath remodel. However, after checking into prices I opted for a more budget-friendly grid mirror which provides the perfect touch behind my new, clawfoot tub! In planning the actual bathroom, I did my best to stay as true to my original design as possible.
Whenever I remodel a room, I like to create a virtual design board with the exact products I intend to use. This helps me space plan, try out different looks, stay within budget, and determine what changes I need to make to my design before implementation. Based on my original design board, I created the following virtual design and used it as my blueprint for my new bathroom.

The After: Bathroom Functionality Solutions
The new bath design solves all of our previous functionality problems. As you enter the bathroom from our master suite hallway, you are greeted by a beautiful barn door that adds character, functionality, and beauty to the space while setting the entire urban farmhouse vibe. The new door also frees up square footage inside the bathroom making the space feel much larger than before.

One of the most difficult design decisions I had to make in the bathroom was whether or not to keep the double-hung window “as-is,” or replace it. Replacing the window was going to add cost, and I was hoping I could keep it in the shower and work around it. After many pro/con conversations about a double-hung window in the shower, I agreed with my contractor: it had to go!
I opted instead for a small, horizontal window that lets in some natural light, ensures privacy, and highlights all THREE of my gorgeous Delta Zura shower fixtures!
My shower includes the Zura TempAssure Shower Trim, the Zura Pendant Raincan Shower Head, and the 5-Setting Hand Shower. Beyond the beautiful design, the H2Okinetic Technology® in my pendant shower head sculpts the water — creating a warmer, more intense spray that gives the feeling of a high-flow shower without actually using more water. No more cramped corner-shower for me! My shower is now my own personal spa.
Expanding the shower to allow for three water fixtures, a built-in toiletries niche, and a shower seat was beyond my wildest dreams for this space! I am so grateful to be rid of my cramped corner shower and am truly proud of this design.

Bathroom Storage Details
Our previous bathroom lacked storage, and I knew I needed to remedy that problem in the new design. Built-in storage and greater vanity storage were things my husband and I both wanted but creating that within the same footprint can be tricky! I decided the best way to fulfill our needs was by creating open shelving next to the shower and choosing a double bathroom vanity with deep drawers. I’ll share a tutorial on how I created the shelves in an upcoming post. They are both beautiful and practical, and I’m so excited about the finished look!
I deliberately made the shelves extra deep to allow for basket storage, as well as hidden storage. I’m able to store cleaning supplies, hair curlers, and other items I’m not using everyday behind the baskets.
Our new, double vanity includes more storage than our original single vanities and takes up much less space. I really wanted to find a vanity with a vintage look so I was thrilled to come across this piece! The dresser design with pull-out drawer storage is perfect for storing everyday bath essentials.

I believe all good design incorporates a healthy combination of masculine and feminine elements. My husband originally worried that our bathroom would feel too feminine and really appreciates the modern touch the Delta Zura Bath Collection brings to the space. The strong shape of the chrome Zura faucets combine beautifully with the feminine curves of the French-inspired vanity. I set out to create an urban farmhouse bathroom incorporating old world sensibilities with modern conveniences and am proud of the end result. My entire bathroom is a harmonious fusion of modern elegance!
Urban Farmhouse Bathroom
The showstopper of this entire design has to be the clawfoot tub with Zura Floor Mount Tub Filler with Hand Shower. It is my absolute favorite element! Over the summer, I stayed at a cottage in Barnsley Gardens with a beautiful clawfoot tub and as I said on my Instagram stories, “Mark my words. I will have a clawfoot tub in my bathroom one day!” Little did I know that the day would arrive so soon!

The plank ceiling, shiplap walls, grid mirror, cement tile, and raindrop chandelier provide a perfect backdrop for my double-slipper tub. I adore everything about this space.
I hope you enjoyed touring my urban farmhouse bath remodel! It was an honor to take inspiration from the world, weave it into my design, and create a beautiful, functional space that is our new favorite room in the house. Thank you Delta Faucet for allowing me to make my dream bath a reality!

HiI I love your bathroom!! I have deep shelves like yours too! One question, where did you get those baskets? I have never seen ones that long!
Beth says
Thanks! I bought them at Christmas Tree Shop last year and kind of just lucked out.
Kara says
I really want cement tiles for my bathroom but am reading up on install and upkeep and am wondering if they are a good fit for the bathroom. What was your experience like and have you noticed any issues so far?
Kathy Borchard says
Beth, your remodel is very inspiring. Can you tell me the dimensions of the bathroom space? I have a similar dilemma with the jaccuzi tub in the corner adjacent to a small shower and a 4×4 ft window above the tub on the same side as the shower. We are trying to limit the plumbing changes (to save $)but would like a rectangular massage tub and a larger walk in shower (for future needs). Our bathroom space is 10×12. Thank you!
Beth says
Our bathroom is around 8×10 so it’s a small space.
Amanda Anderson says
I LOVE that vanity. Do you happen to remember who the manufacturer is? Your bathroom is beyond perfect! I’m giving the link to my builder with a note that says DITTO.
Beth says
Thanks so much Amanda! Sorry if this email is coming through twice. I’m having trouble with my comment form today. The link for my vanity is here: http://rstyle.me/n/cc9eb5n7aw . Looks like it will be back in stock on June 7th.

Wondering how you like the vanity, thinking of purchasing but curious if you feel the drawers and vanity are made of quality materials. Could not find reviews on it. Also how long did it take to ship it to you. Love the bathroom!
Beth says
Hi Shannon! I found the vanity on Wayfair and it was sold out so I searched for it elsewhere and found it at Shades of Light. I was able to purchase the floor model from a store and have it shipped to me. It took a few weeks and I love it. However, it has a marble top and weighed over 300+ pounds. Getting it to our third level was terrifying and difficult but we did it! The vanity isn’t real wood which doesn’t bother me but might bother someone else. The drawers are spacious and slide well, the marble is lovely, and the finish on the vanity is exactly what I was looking for.

Absolutely Stunning! Your shower is my inspiration picture. Can you tell me your shower dimensions?
Beth says
Thanks Kim! I don’t remember the exact dimensions off the top of my head, but it’s about 5.5 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Heidi says
It’s beautiful!!
I have the same barn door, and was wondering what stain color you used to match for
The door trim?
Beth says
Hi Heidi! I’m going to do an entire post on the stain because it deserves it. We ran into some major trouble hanging the door so the board you see in the pics is actually not the one that came with the door and I had to stain everything to match. It was tricky but I’ll share next week exactly what I used!
Emma Clark says
How much does it cost in total? Could you recommend where to start with? I love this article, thanks!
Beth says
Hi Emma, it looks like you run a home renovation site so I’m confused by your question. Prices on bath remodels really depend on where you live, cost of labor, cost of materials, and how much you decide to DIY. Thanks for stopping by.
Michelle Gilliland says
Where to start? I love it all. Every bit of the tile, the barn door, the grid mirror, the vanity, THE TUB?! It is all amazing!! What a fun experience, and I’m glad that the bathroom is finished!
Beth says
Ha! I’m so glad it’s finished too! Thanks friend. And thanks for keeping me afloat when I was sinking. 😉
