It’s been two months since we moved into our lovely South Carolina home, and I am finally settling in and making some redecorating progress! Things took a bit longer than expected as I anxiously awaited install of our new hardwood flooring. The flooring finally went in last week (post coming soon), so yay, let the room redecorating begin!
Our master bedroom was one of my least favorite rooms in the house, and I knew I wanted to tackle it first. I had switched out the ceiling fan for a chandelier the first week we moved in, but that was as far as I had gotten with this room up until last week. We were sleeping on a mattress on the floor surrounded by clutter and disassembled furniture. This makeover was a great reminder that a room can be pulled together quickly when you put your mind to it (and work your tail off)!
Our bedroom faces north and is very dark with only two corner windows. To begin transforming the space, I painted it white in Storyteller by Sherwin Williams. It did wonders to brighten and lighten the entire room! I don’t often opt for stark white paint, but I knew it would be perfect for this space.
Next, I installed Milton & King wallpaper to create a feature wall that gives the illusion of moulding. I absolutely love it! It was easy to install, looks great, and adds texture to the room while keeping it bright. Finally, I set up our bedroom furniture, styled the space, and sighed in relief that one more room feels more like “home”.
All of our old bedroom furniture works well in this room, so I was able to reuse our furniture; however, our bedroom closet located in the en suite bathroom is sorely lacking in space. We needed more shelf space for our belongings, and I’ve been brainstorming and searching for an attractive storage solution for months.
I really wanted a double, barn door storage unit, and I even considered building one. After looking into costs of various options, I was thrilled to find this modern farmhouse storage cabinet by Better Homes & Gardens for only $219 each.
Psst. Here are the instructions on how to convert the Walmart Modern Farmhouse Cabinets.
I followed the enclosed directions to put the storage cabinets together, making a few simple modifications to one of the barn doors.
The doors are designed with predrilled holes for the pull and decorative moulding to be aligned on the left. I wanted the doors to mirror each other, so I covered up the holes with the provided hardware-hiding stickers, drilled new holes for the pull, and used liquid nails to secure the moulding in the opposite direction. It was a simple change that gave me the exact look I desired for less!
These cabinets have one fixed shelf on the left side of the cabinet, but all of the other shelves are adjustable. Right now, I’m using the inner shelves to store clothing and the outer shelves to store tchotchkes. 😉 I may need to switch out all of the cute decorative accessories for storage baskets in the future, but for now I’m loving the way it looks!
Oh it is such a relief to have one beautifully styled room in the house! I still have a few things left to do in this room before it is complete, but it’s come such a long way in just a few short weeks.
The pomeranians both love my room as much as we do! I constantly forget to close the bedroom door, and they sneak in and jump up on our bed every chance they get–smart, naughty doggies!

Did you have any trouble drilling new holes? I’m worried it’ll crack the wood
Beth says
I didn’t have any difficulty.
Maggie says
Wasn’t hard at all! It looks great and was so easy. Thanks for the great idea!!
Beth says
Great! I’m so glad it worked for you!
Heather says
Do you know if I can find the provided hardware-hiding stickers to match anywhere? We just bought 2 of these shelves in hopes of doing what you did, and there were no stickers in either box.
Beth says
Oh no! There definitely should have been stickers included in your hardware. I would contact Sauder Customer Service since the piece is BHG but manufactured by Sauder and explain what you need. Here is their page: http://www.sauder.com/CustomerService/Home.aspx

HI! Like you you i purchased two of the farmhouse storage units with the intensions of putting them side by side. I noticed your review on the website I purchased from. But I didn’t notice any enclosed instructions that detailed on how to put two units together. Can you point me in the right direction?

Hi Lindsey, I detail exactly what I did to make the modifications to the storage cabinet within this very post and include pictures of how I glued the pieces and covered the holes. Take a look at the post again to see. Thanks!
