Back to school already?! Get your kids excited by making these adorable chocolate chalkboards!
If you missed the Back to School: S is for S’mores party, be sure to check it out! There are a lot of cute DIY back to school decor ideas to try out! Today I wanted to give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to make the chocolate chalkboards. These “chalkboard” chocolate bars make such an adorable photo prop, and the best photo props are always edible! 😉
Follow this step-by-step tutorial, and I promise that it’s easier than it looks! My boys LOVED them and I’m guessing that your kiddos will love this idea, too.
SUPPLIES:
- Dark chocolate candy bar (Milk chocolate can also be used, but the dark chocolate looks more realistic.)
- Caramels (2 candies per chocolate bar)
- Computer printed message (I used the free font Learning Curves)
- Wood Skewer
- Pen
- Powdered sugar
- Pastry brush (Any type of clean brush will work, or even a paper towel.)
- Knife
- Rolling pin
DIRECTIONS:
- Place unwrapped chocolate bar “upside down.” The flat side of the bar should be facing towards you. If you bar has a whitish looking coating on the chocolate, brush it off with the pastry brush, or wipe it off with a paper towel. This process restores the chocolate back to the dark color. Place your computer printed message (as shown in the pic below) on top of the chocolate bar. Trace the words with a pen and ensure that that pen isn’t set to write. (So unclick the pen!) Press firmly with the pen to create an indentation into the chocolate. If you’ve been practicing hand lettering for a few years, you can skip this step and showcase your own beautiful penmanship!
2. Remove the paper and use your wood skewer to trace over your letters that you made using the pen. The goal is to create a ledge for your powdered sugar to rest inside. Use your brush to remove the excess chocolate shavings as you go.
3. Cover your entire chocolate bar with powdered sugar. Brush off excess sugar. Repeat step 2 if you see any bare spots where the powdered sugar did not take well.
4. Roll the caramel candy into your hands to soften them up, and then roll them flat using a rolling pin. Cut the caramel into even strips to create a “frame” for your chalkboard. Aren’t they starting to look so cute?
5. Enjoy!
These DIY Chocolate Chalkboards are so simple and easy to customize for any event. The ideas are endless – teacher appreciation gifts, dinner party name tags, place settings, party favors, and of course photo props. Taking pictures of your children with a sign of the grade they are entering on the first day of school always makes for a sweet memory. I couldn’t think of a cuter sign for my boys than an edible chalkboard.
