Living in an urban area my entire adult life has cultivated a passion and appreciation for container gardening! Whether you have a small patio or a sprawling porch, container planters allow you to instantly add color and boost curb appeal. One of my all-time-favorite flowers to plant (everywhere and anywhere) are hydrangeas! As a perennial plant which comes back year after year, hydrangeas are a great investment. My city backyard is full of them, and this spring I wanted to carry that beauty over to our front porch.
Tip 1: Find the right spot for your hydrangea container planters before planting.
Hydrangeas typically prefer full sun in the morning and afternoon shade; however, I’ve had success growing them here in Pennsylvania in partial shade. If you live in a northern state (Zones 4-5a), your hydrangeas will be able to handle more sun. If you’re in a southern state, they will prefer an area that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. The great thing about container planting is the ability to easily move your garden around if your plants become unhappy! Find a spot that you think will work best and adjust if needed.
Tip 2: Look for the blue pots!
Armed with my shopping list for two BloomStruck® Hydrangeas, six sweet potato vine plants, one bag of potting soil, two large decorative containers, and one bag of slow release fertilizer, I headed to my local nursery to purchase the necessary supplies. I always look for the blue pots of Endless Summer® Hydrangeas! Unlike other hydrangeas that only bloom once or twice, Endless Summer® Hydrangeas are unique in that they bloom continuously from spring to fall.
Tip 3: Properly prep and prepare your containers before planting.
I found two cute gunmetal planters in an aged-copper finish that looks great with my copper mailbox. Proper drainage of your containers is crucial to the health of your plants. Make sure that your containers have drainage holes on the bottom and if not use your drill to create some. My containers unfortunately didn’t come with holes, so I drilled four holes in the bottom of my each planter using a 1/4 drill bit. I also like to place a few paper coffee filters at the bottom of my pot before filling with potting soil to prevent the soil from spilling out of the drilled drainage holes. This is a great way to protect your porch or deck while still allowing your plants to properly drain.
Tip 4: Plant your hydrangeas in containers and use annuals for added interest.
Fill your container with soil, leaving about 8 inches at the top for your hydrangea. Place your hydrangea in the center of your pot and position it to your liking. My pots have handles on the sides, so I made sure each looked their best from the front of the container before covering with potting soil. Next, fill the rest of the container with potting soil, leaving a one inch gap on top for watering.
For an added pop of interest, place annuals around the base of your hydrangea. I added some sweet potato vines which highlight the pretty chartreuse greens in the hydrangeas. Lastly, fertilize your plant with a slow release fertilizer and water thoroughly.
I absolutely love how beautiful the Bloomstruck® Hydrangeas look on my front porch next to my blue door! I found a cute wreath at HomeGoods that incorporates dried hydrangeas in a similar color scheme, and it’s just perfect for spring.
Tip 5: Text ENDLESSSUMMER to 73095 for timely care tips for your hydrangeas.
This is a fun tip that I just learned about! If you text ENDLESSSUMMER to 73095, you will receive care tips and reminders on how best to care for your hydrangeas.
I’m looking forward to seeing how my plants flourish this summer and will keep you updated on how they are doing! If you want to find Endless Summer® Hydrangeas in your area, you can click here and enter your zipcode for your local retailers.
