Although my boys have never seen the movie, they are obsessed with the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy. My youngest, Zephan, wanted to buy a Rocket the Raccoon costume back in August before Guardians of the Galaxy costumes were even on display. My oldest begged to go as Groot (the tree looking character). My husband and I hadn’t originally planned on dressing up, but we thought it would be fun to surprise the boys after a very emotionally draining week. We threw together a Gamora and Star Lord costume and the boys could not have been more thrilled! Woohoo! We get the coolest parents of the year award. 🙂
A few weeks ago, Zephan broke his wrist after rough housing with a boy at school. Last Sunday, Zeph was playing at a friend’s home, tripped, and broke his femur and needed to be hospitalized in order to reset the bone. (We are working with his doctors to figure out the cause behind his weak bones.) With a cast up to his shoulder and another up to his hip, Zephan will be confined to a wheelchair for the next several months and it’s been a difficult adjustment for all of us. Seeing the smile on his face last night when he saw Matt & I dressed up was priceless! Of course, at first he was totally freaked out when he saw me and who could blame him?!
For my Gamora costume, I bought a $5 wig from Walmart and used clothing I had on hand. My green makeup was created by crumbling two green eyeshadow discs together with foundation. I used black eyeshadow on my lips and to highlight my cheeks. Since Gamora has white scars on her face, I tried to create them with a white eye pencil, but they didn’t show up on camera. My fingerless “gloves” are actually just socks with the toe cut off and a slit in the sock heel for the thumb. The costume wouldn’t impress any cosplay fanatics, but it was very easy to toss together last minute and impressed my kiddos which is what I was going for.
Matt made a thrift store run for his Star Lord costume and found a burgundy jacket and large belt buckle. The rest of the costume came from items around the house.
Many don’t know this about my husband, but he is a mad crafter and enjoys making kids’ crafts. Matt made the wooden sword I am holding for last year’s Lord of the Rings costumes. And this year he made Asher’s Groot costume which turned out absolutely amazing! The costume was made from a pajama set from the thrift store, puffed fabric paints, acrylic paints, cardboard, butcher paper, and twine.
The Groot feet were my favorite. 🙂 I hope all of you have a safe and Happy Halloween! Thanks for stopping by and checking out our costumes and thanks to all of you who have prayed for my sweet boy. Your words of encouragement, prayers, and emails have been appreciated!

I know this post is a few years old. I just found it while looking how to make a Groot costume for my son,who is wheelchair bound. I was curious if you found out what was causing your son to have weak bones that break easy.

I’m behind on my reading…but this was too awesome to pass up. I love the costumes and the fact that Matt made Groot is so great. My husband and I loved making our son’s costume this year; we loved the smile on his face most of all. I hope you get some answers from the doc soon.
