Our bedroom was one of the first spaces I decorated when we moved into this home. It was a very dark and cave like room that felt cold and drab. To quickly brighten and cozy up the room, I replaced the carpeting with hardwoods, painted the room white, and installed box molding wallpaper which was supposed to be a temporary fix until I could add real molding to the space. The wallpaper was a fun faux option, but the time has come to add the real deal to the walls! Below is a collage of just a few of the looks this room has donned during our time here. I still appreciate all of these looks but am ready for a change!
Bedroom Renovation Plans
Add Windows and Closet Storage Space
Our bedroom is attached to a puzzlingly tiny walk-in closet and spacious bathroom. I would love to completely renovate the bathroom at some point down the road, but for now the priority is to add more light to the bedroom and more storage space to the closet. We mulled over all of the different ways we could enlarge our current closet storage space and nothing we came up with was within budget. I decided that a wall of built-in wardrobes would be the easiest and most affordable option. We will also open up the wall and add two new windows to the bedroom to let in more light.
We have already started assembling the Ikea Pax wardrobes on one wall of our bedroom. I’m still waiting for some of the internal components to be shipped to me but am so excited to get everything assembled! Here is the basic closet plan:
Add DIY Picture Frame Molding
Picture frame molding is classic, traditional, elegant, and timeless. I think it will be the perfect addition to our bedroom and help blend in the wall of wardrobes. I used the photo below with permission from Lauren at Bless’er House as the background for my bedroom mood board. Lauren has a great step-by-step tutorial on how to add picture frame molding that I encourage you to check out!
I also highly recommend checking out this picture frame molding tutorial from Alisa at A Glass of Bovino. This blog post is very detailed and gives lots of great tips and tricks for designing your box layout and figuring out spacing for your molding.
My friend Rhoda also has a helpful tutorial on how to add picture frame molding to a room. I’m also loving the floor to ceiling monochromatic paint! Since I’m battling a dark room, I plan to keep everything white but that may change once we have the new windows installed!
Budget Decor Bedroom Decorating Ideas
I’ll be honest with you. Part of me would love to just sell off everything in my bedroom and start over from scratch! However, with a kid heading to college soon, that idea is neither practical nor budget-friendly. Instead, I will use much of what I have on hand already to achieve a fresh look. I plan to buy just a few new items for the room such as the light fixture, bedding, and rug. I will paint my current dresser cabinets with charcoal mineral paint to achieve a similar look. My husband will make the bench for me and I may DIY the botanical prints. Achieving a beautiful look for less is always a priority!
I hope you will follow along on my bedroom progress! I’ll be sure to update you as we progress in our plans.
