Nightstand Transformation

Oh Crikey… to Me Likey!

She was gross. No other word to describe her. She was disheveled, smelly, and falling apart, a piece of trash by the curb. Any normal human being wouldn’t have given her a second glance, but I wanted her. I fought my desire to bring in this stray and tried to act like a “normal” rational person. Hubby knows me. He saw her too and knew she was my type. He also knows I’m not normal. He casually asked, “Don’t you want that table by the curb?” No, she’s too far gone, too neglected. She’d need so much rehabilitation in order to be socially acceptable once again. Oh, I can’t help myself. YES! I’ll save her from her fate! Are we still talking about the table? Maybe not. I like to bring beauty out of chaos. I love the creative challenge of creating. I know God does too. When we allow ourselves to be molded and shaped by him…rescued from the curb…we turn into something far more lovely than we ever could have imagined. Anyhow, we were talking decorating right? Back on topic…What really drew me to this poor thing was this. I’m such a sucker for pretty things that swirl.

Man. She was in bad shape. She had this rotting contact paper on the top and warped veneer under that. It wasn’t pretty and required surgery with a scalpel (aka as a chisel and major sandpaper).

Mmmmmm. Lovely. Looks like she’s been through some plagues—floods and locusts to name a few.

Uh, yeah. Don’t typically use this while rehabbing furniture but drastic measures were necessary here. I even considered straight bleach but thought better of it. I didn’t want to kill her just purify her.

I didn’t take any pictures of the next couple of steps. Oops. I took painter’s caulk and covered the entire top and all gaps. Why painter’s caulk? Well, 1. I have no idea what I’m doing and it seemed like a good choice 2. I’m still on a spending freeze and it’s what I had in the basement. I then took a can of metal spray paint in Oil-rubbed Bronze and accented with a can of Champagne. They were made for metal but again…they were there.

I sprayed some of the accent color on a paper plate and drew the A and Z. This table is going in my boys’ bedroom; Asher and Zephan were thrilled to see their monograms on their knobs.

I paint brushed on a little accent color here and there.

And wa-la! She’s looking good now and will look super cute in their room.

***Update:  She is in the room and looking good!  Pose for the paparazzi sweetheart!****

A little to your left now….perfect!

A profile shot now…beautiful!

And now you are completely upstaged by the cute kids!  Sorry lady.  Your five minutes of fame are up.

  1. Goodness! I know how much fun all that scraping and pulling off wh0-know-what is! The finished project is worth it, isn't it! Wonderful job.

  2. Amazing!!! I love it…. I missed out on some beauty this morning as I was heading to work on the bus. It was trash day and someone threw out some wooden drawers. I almost had an impulse to jump off the bus to scoop it up but I was pretty far from home so no luck…

  3. What's funny about the whole curb thing is that I'm one of those sick demented people that loves Monday nights because Tuesday is trash day and I can scour the neighbors throw-aways the night before! Yikes! Did I just admit that on the interweb?!?

    Love the completed table!

  4. I am now a follower. After this transformation, I want to stick around, and see what will be next.

  5. Beautiful! I love the redo! Scrubbing bubbles is awesome! I usually use it in my bathroom, hehe. I had to giggle when I saw that, what we do in the moment of redoing, lol! It looks so wonderful! I love the knobs!

  6. Beth, you have great vision and foresight, not to mention the ability, to take something so far gone and bring it back to life! Your table turned our so cute. That poor baby had been through the wringer! Love that you used what was on hand to enhance it- and how cute to add their initials to the knobs.

  8. Super cute transformation!

Thank you so much for your prayers & support with Gabriel!

  9. Okay, I'll finish your thought: The Lord has totally taken off the veneer and accretions in my life and made something beautiful with His own hands (as He has in yours!) I love your creativity, energy, and passion. And I'm NOT biased a bit!
    Love,
    Dad

  10. So cute! I don't think I would have pulled it off the curb. I'm kinda a pansy….

Love what you did with it.

  11. Ahh! Another saver of too far gone furniture! I am a use what I have girl too! I so get it! You did a really great job…total rehab!

  12. I'm now a follower. I love your mishap piece.I picked one up off the side of the road the other day too.

  13. I went to my dashboard and they were there. This was after I restarted my computer. They are not in my reader but I was trying to get rid of them in it anyway so that is ok. Good luck!

  14. You never cease to amaze me! You should have a show on HGTV about what you can do with things around the hosue. (A real show with what people really have, not one of those pseudo-shows where they give you a list before shooting of things you're supposed to "just happen to have" hiding in your basement.) He's beautiful – simply beautiful – quite the transformation! Kudos to you!
