Over the summer, I found these great linens at Goodwill. I wasn’t even sure what they were at first. I just saw all the cute red and white embroidery and thought for $2 I could figure out something to do with them. The long panel shown below and two smaller linens were all included for my two bucks. What a great deal!
I even felt a bit smug that maybe I had just scored some vintage table linens. Upon further inspection, I realized that they were actually curtains…from Kmart. Oh. Well, certainly not as romantic as vintage linens, but they were still cute. Cute enough for Martha Stewart to sell, for someone to get rid of, and for me to re-buy :).
I folded one of the long curtain panels in half and sewed a seam down it to make a “double ply” apron. I stuffed a grosgrain ribbon into my seam, scrunched up the fabric to give it a bit more interest and “flounce” and sewed the ribbon into place. I also sewed the ends of each ribbon to keep them from fraying. Then I purchased a “sticker” from Scrapblog.com and printed it out on my iron on transfer paper. I love the traditions sticker. Chances are really good that I’ll be making some family traditions in this apron, and chances are even better that I’ll be dancing around singing Fiddler on the Roof while wearing it!
I actually like the looks of the smaller apron better, but it’s admittedly not as practical. So typical huh? Why is it that the cuter the item the less practical it is???
I made two of these cute aprons above, for a total of three cute aprons so far! If I can find my other curtain panel, I’ll have one more “double ply” apron to add to my collection. Sisters, would you like the mini-aprons for your birthdays, or shall I give them away to fellow bloggers instead? Let me know! Fellow bloggers, if my sisters don’t want them, they are yours :).

That apron is so cute. I instantly recognized the material…my MIL has kitchen curtains in that exact print from Walmart.

How cute are they! I love the "traditions" one. They work well with the red in your kitchen, too.

You always photograph so well. I love how the aprons have the cinching at the waist, and I responded to your email from my phone, but I tried to save it, and when I went back to finish it, it was gone. So I didn't ignore you . . . just wanted you to know!

You are taking a page right out of Scarletts O'Hara's book (I guess that would be called Gone With The Wind)… and you look just as FABULOUS!
Great job!

These are really, really cute! I have been whining about not having an apron forever. I just have this long (non hostess) black apron from some restaurant. Very random. I love your boots too!

That is cute!!! It would make a cute skirt for a younger girl too! You gotta love repurposing!

The smaller one may not be practical for its intended use in the kitchen, but its cuteness could be made practical for other outside-the-box purposes: tool belt (well, with a pocket or two); fashion accessory (think – the next chunky belt); lingerie (a fun, creative alternative); etc. =)
