1. In your refrigerator, along with your eggs, milk, diet soda, and various left overs, you always have on hand a healthy supply of bagged paint brushes and sometimes even a paint tray.
2. This is the closest thing to a manicure you have seen in quite some time….
3. In summer instead of a farmer’s tan, you are known for your respirator mask tan.
4. A sort of Pavlovian instinct kicks-in–your heart begins to race, your mind begins churning, and salivation commences whenever you see the following symbols…
…and again when you see these symbols….
…and just forget about it if you see this symbol!
5. Your neighbors think you’re crazy because you take pictures of everything you do—step by step–and have been known to even photograph dirty towels to prove the wretchedness of your “before”.
6. Whenever watching anything on television—be it movie, show, or even commercial–you take mental note of all the decor in the background. (I’m guessing right now you are thinking about how you would restyle this bookshelf and perhaps change out the rug…)
7. You judge many moments in your life by their “blogworthiness”.
8. You are not above pulling out your camera at anytime, in any location, to get a good shot for your readers. Restaurant bathrooms are completely fair game.
9. Your small children “take pictures” of the couch and pretend to post them on their blog.
10. And you might be a DIY/Home Blogger if your idea of a “fun evening” involves decor mags, free catalogs, blog hopping, and Pinterest.
So have you drank the kool aide :)? If so, we’d love to see you next summer at Haven! You’ll be in good company! Have any to add? Go ahead and leave your “you might be a DIY/home blogger if’s” in the comments section. I can’t wait to read them!

This is absolutely hilarious! I just found you through Miss Mustard Seed and the conference link. 🙂 Yeah!
All I could think in addition to the above, being an avid craigslister like most diy/bloggers, my 4 and 5 year old daughters “play”, “Well, let’s just sell it” OR thry ask me if I’m holding or moving basically ANYthing, “Mommy…are you selling that?” OR even, “Mommy, I don’t need this Lego (or headband or whatever!)… let’s just sell it, ok?” Um….let’s be generous and just give those things to someone who needs them! Sheesh! Lol 🙂

Gosh, I was just sifting around rollers and paintbrushes looking for lunch before I sat down and read this. I can’t focus on laundry because my mind is too busy dreaming up my next furniture build. Here’s what else I notice, with all of the thought poured into the tablescapes and little vignettes around my house- not a one that doesn’t have a drill or a screwdriver, or some remainder of another project mixed in there. My brain is going faster than my body can keep up. I think there is medication for that…

I enjoyed this post & I have every one of these “symptoms” – especially the painted hands! You know it’s bad when something happens in your life & your first thought is, “Oh wow, this will be great to blog about!”. ;D
Warmly, MIchelle

Too funny, I did a post a couple years ago about paint in my fridge and I do get the strangest looks when photographing odd things in odd locations!! Gotta have a reference and a photo to demonstrate the point! 🙂 Janell

Just wanted to share a quick tip to remove spray paint…I’ve had great luck with both suntan oil and baby oil applied with a cotton pad. May take a little rubbing but it does take it off. Hope that helps. Great post!

Holy Cats. I guess that means I am a DIY/Home Blogger then. This is hilarious and so true! (FYI, my eyebrows are about as thick as that model’s right now b/c I have been too busy to get to the salon…)
Ashley @ the handmade home says
Have you been spying on me? 😉 our neighbors think I am SO weird. The other day I was photographing Jamin for a step by step, and this man walked by with his dog…and then again…asking if I was so shocked he {jamin} was actually doing some work that I was documenting it. And the little older ladies on our street comment all the time on how we’re always out in our driveway cutting something! HILARIOUS.
Carli says
Loved It! Great job! You totally captured the essence of DIY blogging!
Jen says
My hands look like that more often than I’d like to admit, I often have paint brushes lying on my counter, wrapped in foil…sometimes for WEEKS! The only thing I would add is looking through my camera card and finding obscure pictures that I have forgotten about. Things like me cleaning the stove or holding a screwdriver or a partially painted something. Thanks for the chuckle this morning, Beth!
Elizabeth@BlueClearSky says
Priceless! I so get it.

Hi Beth-
Very clever and fun post. Yes – to all of it and I am proud of it all – even taking photos of restaurant bathrooms to my daughters horror. It makes life fun and enjoyable.
I am looking forward to attending Haven – only wish it were next month instead of next year.
My best- Diane

Ha! Beth, you crack me up! If…your children ask “Aren’t you going to take a picture, Mommy?” every time you do something around the house.

Haha, I may not blog about home diy as much, but most of these observations are scarily accurate for me too!, particularly always on the look out for ideas/design inspiration, and free stuff that I could repurpose. 🙂

if you relocated all your kids memory/school storage boxes to make room for the new paint colors you scored on the sale shelf at Home Depot haha

Oh yeah! I always have a paint brush in the frig. I frequently use my granite counter top to pain molding. And tonight hubby and I went to dinner and rounded out our date night by going to Lowe’s to pick out lighting for the half bath we are redoing. I do need to go to Haven.

You made me laugh. Just tonight I was hauling stuff outside and taking pics and I thought I wonder what my neighbors think about me taking pics of all my junk! And the kids pretending, that is too sweet, mine are grown so I don’t experience that but of course they usually do emulate their parents. Cute post!
Cheryl says
This is perfect…I thought I was the only one who does these crazy things. Sometimes even I can’t believe the places I bring my camera! What a great post…I’m still laughing:-)

So true…sometimes I can’t simply look at something because I am trying to figure out how it was made, what they made it out of and so on and so on! I am so glad mine are not the only hands that look like your pic! Thanks for the great post, got my laugh in for the day and then some!
Happy Crafting!

Beth, I love this post! Ironically, I posted a similar list last Friday on my blog…Top 5 Signs You’ve Been Remodeling Too Long – http://makingittooperfect.blogspot.com/2011/07/top-5-signs-youve-been-remodeling-too.html
My favorite one is the fact that seeing a drill sitting on my kitchen counter is more normal than a coffee cup.
I would love to be at Haven next year! Sounds like a dream come true.
Uncluttered Lifestyle says

Debra from Bungalow says
Oh yeah, this describes me to a T! I’m always redorating spaces in my head and I should post about how I ruined my fancy gel manicure with paint. When I see something free I immediately see limitless possibilities of what it could become…..like the time I saw a pile of beautifully aged wooden pallets and had heart palpatations. They were so lovely but I knew I’d probably never use them 🙁
Anxious to hear more about Haven, soon I hope.
Myra @ My Blessed Life says
HAHA! Glad to be counted in the DIY Home blogger number. Such fun! Can’t wait for Haven!
Missy says
OH, I do have one to add….I usually have at least 12 projects going at once…if I don’t, I think I must have some sort of illness. 🙂
Christine says
I’ve got nothing to add…fantastic, and alas…true.
Missy says
HA!! I was laughing out loud on this one, because I’ve done EVERY. SINGLE. ONE of THEM. 🙂 (including restyling that entertainment center before I read your caption!) lol
See ya at Haven!
Hugs
