**Update: If you’re looking for the step by step tutorial with tips on how to create gorgeous sock bun curls, please click here!
For Fashion (and beauty) Friday, I thought I’d share with you my new favorite no-heat-curly-hair-how-to! I have to say that getting up every morning to get my kids to school on time is killing my beauty routine. Showering at night is the only sure fire way to ensure that hygiene is taken care of, but my hair typically looks blech after sleeping on it all night. So what’s a vain, lazy girl like me to do *wink*?
Well, Pinterest has saved me once again with the introduction of the Sock Bun Curling Method! Basically you take a sock, snip off the toe, roll the sock into a donut shape, place your slightly-damp hair in a ponytail on the top of your head, and then roll your hair around the sock and sleep on it all night. When you wake in the morning, you take out your sock and ponytail and are left with gorgeous curls! It’s like magic. These pics were taken eight hours after taking the sock bun out this morning and the curls are still going strong.
Here is a front view. Granted, the side curls were more prominent this morning, but it’s still acceptable and soooo much better than my typical slicked back pony tail.
Do to so many great questions as to how I get the sock bun curls to work for me, I’ve created a step by step photo tutorial for you. Just click here to be taken to the sock bun tutorial.

It’s when I come across posts about how to get easy curls that I find myself feeling lucky to have beautiful, natural curls.

Ok so I have fine hair to and I tried this last night and the curls are gorgeous this morning, but my only concern is I have a huge crease at the top of my head now from the pony holder…any suggestions? I am really wanting to do this for a graduation… Thanks everyone!

Your question is a couple months old but I’ve been reading that if you use a scrunchie or the piece of sock you cut to wrap your hair instead of the traditional elastic you get less of a crease/kink. Another poster carefully cuts the elastic out after the sock is rolled all the way down.
Hope it helps.

I found your post by googling “sock bun curls for fine hair”. I have fine hair like you, so I’m always skeptical about curling methods. My hair has difficulty holding curl. Do you use any products with this method, either before or after the bun is in? I’m going to try this tonight. Your hair texture looks similar to mine, so I’m hoping it will work for me too! 🙂

Hi Jen, My hair is really fine and thin but has some natural curl to it and isn’t slippery or poker straight. My hair does take curl pretty well from heat and the sock bun method has been hit and miss for me. Sometimes I get fab results and sometimes it just doesn’t work right. So if you try it once and aren’t pleased, try it again! I have tried spraying my hair with a bit of hair spray while still damp and that does help but typically I just put Moroccan oil in my hair after drying and the then roll it. Good luck!

I love this. It is like magic. It does however get different results depending on the type of sock I use. I prefer men’s dress socks. They are easier to roll, and the curls seem to hold their shape better.
Beth @A to Z says
Thanks for stopping by Stephanie! And yes, I completely agree. I like using mens dress socks as well. I’ve also found that placing two sock buns on top works better for me.

My hair is naturally curly and a little dry, so a leave-in spray is practically a necessity. Shielo Antioxidant Leave in Spray was the first leave-in spray I ever had good results with. I’ve tried many other brands from stores and salons, but none so far have given as much non-greasy shine, plus moderate frizz control, as the Shielo Leave-In Spray. It’s very light, so you can use a little or a lot depending on your hair, and it doesn’t leave a “waxy” feeling like some other leave-in’s can. I know some people with kind of oily hair who don’t like this product, but it’s fantastic for my hair type!

Thanks for the tip! Works great and I have gotten some nice comments on my hair! A great alternative to the straightening that I usually have to do to get it to look decent! And talk about simple and quick!

Such a great idea. When I was in college, I used to put my hair up like this, only used two rollers at the top. This is even easier with no pinning. Many thanks for sharing!!!

Gosh this looks gorgeous! I am not sure mine is long enough. I’ll have to try it. I love your scarf too 🙂

I am soo growing my hair out with the sole purpose of trying this!! Soo cool! My girls (all teenagers) are going to LOVE this! :). Thanks for sharing Beth!

Now I’m wishing my hair was long again! I’ll have to try this on the girls though. Thanks for sharing the idea!

Beth,
Ha,I love the “over the shoulder” photos! Your hair looks gorgeous. This should be easy for me as I sleep with my hair in a ponytail on top of my head overnight every night. Thanks for the tip. On another note, did you wrap sisal around your buffet lamps or purchase them that way?
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
Gasping! Your hair looks great…mine is really heavy and has kinky waves. The only thing I’ve found to smooth things out and still have curl are hot rollers. I am going to have to try this method b/c I think (like you mentioned in the comments) that it would cut down on the frizz from getting hair caught in an elastic. Thanks for the tip!!

FABULOUS! The idea and your hair! 🙂 I’m off to check out the tutorial. Thanks for sharing this Beth!

My hair isn’t as long as yours, but I’m still going to try it to see if I can get some pretty curls like yours. I wore a sock bun a bunch in the spring and had forgotten all about it.
Carmen @ Life with Sprinkles on Top says
Ahhh! Your hair looks beautiful! I’ll have to try this. I seriously hate blow drying my hair.
I really love the harvest color top and scarf. So pretty!

I can’t wait to try this tonight! I HATE blow drying. With a passion.

I am so on this one as I showered last night before bed and woke up looking like a bad 1980’s rock star!!!

I thought the photo of the back of your hair was beautiful, but then I saw the photo of you with the camera. Looks like it could be a movie poster! You look great in that rusty color. I need to learn to tie scarves–that one looks beautiful on you. And I love the expression on your face!

Maybe when my hair grows out…..I will have to remember this bc I have very fine hair as well.
Gloria (Potentially Beautiful) says
Very pretty and natural looking. I want to grow my hair out again. I think it’s too short to do this right now.
Michelle says
Your hair is beautiful. I think i’ll try this but my hair is SO THICK and heavy… i usually use 3-4 bands to keep it up… and it never “falls” so beautifully when it comes down… i’m a slick-back ponytail kinda chick i guess. 🙂
Jessica@nucheysmommy says
I’ll have to try….you are hilarious taking pics through the mirror of the back of your head 🙂
Sarah says
Ahhh! I’m hoping this works for me! My hair is so difficult to style because it’s very fine & doesn’t like to hold a curl. I’m going to try it tomorrow!
Ashley Jones says
Girl, this is awesome!! It save tons & time, not to mention tons of heat damage! Will definitely have to try! Thanks for sharing!

I have tried this twice now and just can not get it to work for me, my hair comes out really funky and crinkly. The hair band method is also a good one, have you seen that?
Beth @A to Z says
I have seen the hair band method but my hair is incredibly fine and it got all caught in the band and was WAY too frizzy. This method leaves me with just the right amount of large curls which I like.
