Home Stories A to Z: Summer Home Tour 2014

Hi everyone! I’m honored to be participating again this year in Gina’s annual Summer Tour of Homes. I LOVE home tours, don’t you? It’s so fun to see everyone’s home in one complete post! Today is the last day of the tour, so if you missed any of the homes, today is a fantastic day to catch up on all 25 home tours.

If you are new to my blog or just visiting from Jen’s at Tatertots & Jello, welcome! My name is Beth and I live in the city in a “twin” row home with my husband Matt, two little boys Asher and Zephan (the A to Z in my blog title) and two cute pomeranian pups (Eowyn & Pippin). I believe every space, object, and home has a story to tell, and I am passionate about telling our story.

Come on inside and have a look around!

Our home has a unique story. It was damaged in a flood due to a hurricane back in the 70′s and sat abandoned for 30 years. It was heinous and beyond scary, but I believe all things can be redeemed. Six years ago, we moved to the area and reconnected with some college friends who owned a house-flipping company. We purchased our home from them when it was nothing but a shell and worked together to design and reconstruct the interior of the home. The exterior is original to the 1915 construction, however we gutted and renovated the entire interior (ALL of it–nothing original was able to be saved with the exception of the brick walls). We have lovingly worked to breathe life back into our home and restore it to it’s previous glory.

Our living room is still a work in progress, so I only have a few iPhone snapshots of this room. I’m excited to finish it this summer and show it off.

Our dining room is one of my favorite places to sit and work on my laptop. Since our home faces north it tends to be very dark and cavelike. The brick wall adds charm to the space and the natural light feeds my excessive sunshine needs! It’s a fun space to decorate for the seasons and for company.

The half bath on this level is the most used bathroom in the house and gets a major workout. I gave this room a makeover two years ago and am still in love with it.  You can read more about the half-bath makeover here.

Kitchens are the heart of the home and ours is no exception. However the original Million Dollar Red walls in our kitchen (that I chose by the way) made me feel continuously anxious and stressed out. I slowly redecorated the kitchen into a space that now makes me feel calm and happy. Ahhhhhh…so much better! I was proud to have my kitchen featured in Better Homes and Gardens special interest magazine: Kitchen + Bath Makeovers this past spring! You can read more about the process of making over our kitchen here.

Since we live in the city, our backyard is just a tiny blip. I affectionately refer to our yard as “the postage stamp”. Our outdoor spaces include a back patio, a front porch, a back porch, a guest room balcony, and a roof deck, so there are plenty of small outdoor moments to take advantage of if we so choose. The roof deck (not pictured here because it’s in a present state of sad and covered its face when I tried to take a snapshot) is a fantastic space that is completely neglected and honestly never used. I have BIG plans for our roof deck this summer. Granted, they are old plans that were supposed to be finished LAST summer but somehow never got started. This summer is the summer that the roof deck reveal happens, so I hope you’ll come back to see it in all its finished glory! For now, I’ll show you the postage stamp backyard.

I made over a lot of rooms in our home this year! The guest room received a makeover in gray and coral complete with Ikea Billy Built-ins. This room is loaded with simple DIY project tutorials including how to paint a rug, easy foam core window cornices, and coffee table turned desk.

My boys’ bedroom is an eclectic mix of things my boys adore. There is a lot going on in this room visually, but I love that the space encapsulates both of my boys’ personalities and interests so beautifully. You can see all of the DIY project tutorials for my boys’ room here.

Our master bedroom also received a makeover this year. Good grief, I’ve been busy this year! The DIY plank wall made such a difference to the look and feel of our space. I am in love with how it turned out.

What a lovely home…I love your personal touches. Would you willing to share any info you have regarding the succulent planter you have on your front door? I LOVE IT and would love to make one for my home.
Thank you. Can’t wait to see the roof reveal!

Every room is simply gorgeous! Love your décor style and all your perfect accessories! Usually not a fan of children’s bedrooms just because they have to be “child-like” but LOVE your boys’ room – great job! (terrific A Z shelves!) Especially like that you ended your post with some Christmas décor – that always makes a home look special and yours is fabulous.

HI Beth, your home has the same sweet spirit which you possess. Love the family pic and all your attention to detail, color and styling. Thanks for sharing!

If I came to your house I’d be all like, “Please don’t talk to me. I need to take it all in.” IN EVERY ROOM!!!! Then I’d let you talk. Maybe, Unless I needed to go around twice to see what I missed the first time.

    We need to schedule that.

I love your home! So bright and inviting. Its given me some inspiration for styling the home I’m buying in just a few short weeks. Thank you for sharing! On another note, I really love the tea towel and those bird bowls. They’re so fun and cheery! Can you tell me where you found them?

    • Beth says

Thanks Kelly! The tea towel on the dishwasher was from Anthropologie and the bird bowls were found at Home Goods.

  10. Melody says

I have been looking for a sectional just like that!!!! Please tell me it is a recent purchase and what brand!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

    • Beth says

I love our sectional too! It is from LaZBoy and is the Collins Sectional in leather. We looked at sectionals forever before deciding on this one.
