Boys Bedroom Makeover with Modsy
A few months have passed since we moved into our new home, and slowly but surely I am making over each room. My boys’ share a bedroom and have been nagging me to prioritize their room on my never ending “room makeover to-do list.” Truth be told, on move-in day we just tossed a bunch of their furniture into this room (and some furniture that doesn’t belong in the room) and haven’t done much with it since. It’s a cute room-over-the-garage bedroom with a lot of potential, but I didn’t have a design plan for the space. I typically map out a mood board before redesigning a room, but the sloped ceiling and small dormer windows were making it difficult for me to know what furniture pieces might work best in here. I told the boys they would just need to be patient and wait!
When Modsy asked if I’d be interested in partnering with them on a room redesign project and sponsored review on the blog, I immediately thought of the boys’ room! I was excited to get a fresh pair of eyes on the space and was intrigued to see Modsy’s 3D designs come to life. I recently saw one of Modsy’s designs on Chris Loves Julia and was amazed at how life-like their three-dimensional renderings appear. Instead of just a flat inspiration board, Modsy offers you the ability to see furniture and accessories drawn to scale within your room! It’s incredibly helpful and just plain cool.
My boys bedroom as submitted to Modsy in the “before” and pictured in the “after” is the 3D rendering created by Modsy.
How Modsy Works
Modsy allows you to essentially “try on” furniture and accessories before buying them, and you can purchase your furniture and accessories directly through Modsy! Different package levels are offered depending on your needs and packages begin at just $69. Here’s how it works:
- Gather basic ideas of furniture and accessories that inspire you. Take Modsy’s style quiz to get a better feel for your personal decorating style and find suggestions for products you will love. I knew that the boys wanted to keep bunk beds and a sitting area for video games. I wanted the dormer windows to be used for desk space and a better solution for their dressers, but I struggled with furniture selection. It was also important that the room be masculine and transition well into their teen years. I gave all of this information to my designer and allowed her to help me pick out some items.
- Take pictures of your space–clutter and all–and submit room dimensions. Okay, full disclosure here! It was difficult for me to not make the beds, tidy up, and take those random chairs out of here before photographing. However, I thought it would be much better for you to see that you DO NOT have to have a tidy room in order to use Modsy. Modsy will work their magic and take everything out of the room for you–including dust bunnies! 😉
- Modsy creates your 3D renderings to scale and provides two custom designs laid out in your 3D room. It takes 5-10 days after submitting your photos to receive back your renderings, so keep that in mind. It can be difficult to be patient when you’re waiting for something this good! You’ll receive back pictures of your designs that will blow your mind in quality and realism, including a top-down and 360 shot of the room.
- Use the Style Editor tool to make revisions to your designs and shop for the products you love. If you love your design but say you want to swap out a rug for a different selection, you can do so and see immediately how it will look! You can also buy products pictured in your design directly through Modsy which is so convenient. They use in-stock products from 100+ popular brands.
When talking with my designer while she was designing the bedroom, I let her know that I loved everything she had found but wanted to see a different bunkbed in the space that offered more storage. Here are the two designs she sent me.
Bunk bed option #1 is sleek, and gorgeous, and expensive. It’s a little more modern and clean than I normally choose for myself, but I really love it!
Bunk bed option #2 is traditional, contains storage, and is affordable. While I prefer the look of the first #2 is more practical so it won out!
Here are some more fun mock-ups of the bedroom featuring the incredibly horrible before pictures I submitted and what Modsy created for me in the beautiful afters!
You can see that my designer kept the Ikea Kallax bookshelf in the same location but cleared the clutter and restyled the shelves and baskets. I might have to tell my boys to donate some more toys and books! 😉 The clean minimalism of this space is speaking to me.
As requested, my designer gave me desks in the dormer windows and a more adequate entertainment unit for the space. I love that she found desks that fit perfectly in their windows!
The swivel chairs are from Pier 1 and are two of my favorite items in the room! They are masculine, cozy, and perfect for my boys’ needs.

Is the name Modsy indicative of them leaning towards more modern furniture? Or did you find they had traditional or contemporary styles to choose from?
I love, love, LOVE the swivel chairs and am disappointed to find Pier 1 has apparently changed both the design and the colors offered. 🙁
Thank you for sharing your Modsy experience. I’m amazed at the renderings and want to try it myself. My bedroom is stuck with the same furnishings we bought as newlyweds 18 years ago, when we had a much smaller bedroom too. I bet it could be an amazing space.
Hi Gwen, I can honestly say that I’ve never been more impressed with an online decorating service! And this is coming from someone who has no problem envisioning spaces and developing room designs on her own. I will use them again in the future to help me when I’m stuck. And yes, they will absolutely accommodate your personal style and do not just cater to a modern aesthetic. They have a quiz you take to help hone in on what styles you prefer. When I was designing my boys room one-on-one with my designer, she suggested some options that I would never have normally chosen but looked so perfect in the room and really fit my (nearly) teen boys wishes. Some items were also way out of my price range and she found some more affordable look-a-like options for me. Let me know if you decide to try it! I’d love to see your designs and good luck with your bedroom makeover!
Love the boys’ room! Looking for bunk beds for my grandson. Do you know the vendor for the bunk beds in photo 1 and 2???
Great look! Love the chairs and layout.
Thanks Kristie! I loved the layout as well.
Great work on the bedroom! All the new furniture and colors make it look so much better.
Wow. Love the look of the leather chairs and the idea of adding desks under the windows. I’ll definitely have to check out modsy.
Don’t those look great? I had such a great experience working with my designer and was thrilled with what she came up with for the space. I typically prefer to design my own rooms, but this was amazing.
