Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week is here and it’s time to get inspired to tackle those spring painting and home improvement projects! All it takes is a little paint and color to completely change the look and feel of your space. This week, I’m teaming up with several talented bloggers to share our room makeovers, color inspiration, project ideas, and helpful tips. Today I’m thrilled to show off my completed Dorian Gray family room reveal with gallery wall!
The Color Palette
To update this space, I chose a beautiful gray and blue color palette which gives the room a soothing coastal vibe, perfect for summer. Below is a before and after picture of my family room showing the simple changes I made. The before picture was taken back in September during my fall home tour. The tan wall color is SW 6156 Ramie. With a new gray rug in this space, I needed an updated wall color and SW7010 Dorian Gray was the perfect choice! Dorian Gray blends seamlessly with my gray trellis rug and works much better with the cream couch.
Above the board and batten, I used two coats of Sherwin-Williams Harmony Interior Acrylic Latex paint in an eggshell finish. This was my first time using the Sherwin-Williams Harmony line and I absolutely loved it! It is a zero VOC formula. Did you catch that? ZERO! Yay for no fumes! This paint actually helps reduce indoor odors from pets, cooking and smoke, and it can improve your overall air quality by reducing other VOC levels in your home. It was so easy to work with and covered my old paint like a dream. I’ll definitely be purchasing from the Harmony line again!
Tip: Bring your color palette into your accessories by using elements from nature that complement your palette and the season.”
To freshen up my end table, I swapped the wood-chips that were previously in my glass lamp with shells that I’ve collected over the years. I potted some white Phlox in a painted terracota pot and added a sea star to the table. It is a simple yet beautiful update!
The back walls of the room are done in SW 6204 Sea Salt and for this makeover I just touched them up a bit. I have Sea Salt in the kitchen and haven’t tired of it yet. I love how this gray bluish-green hue looks with the Dorian Gray.
Tip: Updating your toss pillow covers and window treatments is a simple way to change your color palette and refresh a space.”
Last year, I replaced most of my poly-fill toss pillows with feather pillows and can now change the look of my sectional in minutes. I make or purchase inexpensive pillow covers and create an entirely different look with little time or expense. For spring/summer, I used two different blue-patterned pillows, a fun love-script pillow, and a gray graphic striped pillow. For the windows, I created faux roman shades using the same fabric as the dining room curtains.
For the coffee table, a few new accessories and a blue mixing bowl filled with tulips create the perfect welcome to warmer weather!
My Pomeranians are always put out when I’m refreshing a room because it cuts into their nap-time. They certainly seem to have made themselves at home on the newly spruced-up sofa!
Gallery Wall with DIY Herringbone Doors
The opposite side of my family room had this sad expanse of wall that was lacking in character and personality. It needed some serious help, and I am so incredibly pleased with how it turned out! I will do a few separate tutorials for the doors and custom artwork. For now, you have to check out my video that shows days worth of work compiled into 1 little minute! If only I could work at this speed in real life. 🙂
I used ProClassic® Interior Acrylic Latex Enamel paint in Sea Salt on the doors in a semi-gloss sheen. This is my absolute favorite paint to use for trim and doors because it gives a very hard and durable finish.
I now smile every time I look up! This wall went from drab to fab with the addition of the herringbone doors and gallery wall!
My boys are named Asher and Zephan and are the inspiration behind the “A to Z” in my blog title. I thought it would be fun to include the letters on the wall. I made all the rest of the art on the wall for less $30 and will be showing you how soon!
The swedish replica grandfather clock was my one splurge item for this makeover. I’ve wanted a swedish-inspired grandfather clock for years now and new that it would look fantastic between my herringbone doors. I was right!
And here is one more before and after of the completed space!
Thanks so much to Sherwin-Williams for sponsoring this post and inviting me to join in on National Painting Week! All words and options are my own. Be sure to check out the other blogger’s projects below. I hope this week inspires you to tackle your own room refresh!

What do you think of Dorian Gray for Exterior on a Craftsman Style Home with reddish brick at base of home? Would you also use the BM White Dove for exterior trim? I love a black front door but may need to reconsider with the Dorian being a warmer gray tone.
Bri M says
Did you use Dorian Gray at full strength or at say 75%? It looks much lighter than some pictures I have seen, wondering if that’s just due to a lot of natural light in your room. Thinking of this for our open concept space and I really love how it looks here!
Beth says
I used it full strength. I think it looks lighter due to the white board and batten 3/4 of the way on our walls. I definitely recommend testing it first but I love the color.
Alison Tower says
Did you by chance paint the armoire in your living room picture and if so could you pretty please share what color it it? My living room walls are sea salt and I would love to repaint the entryway bench in my front hall to coordinate.
Thanks so much in advance!
Alison
Beth says
The blue on the armoire is Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Kitchen Scale. I’ve actually painted it again to Dorian Gray.

The grey living room the grey rug where is that from..? Thank you Im new to your page and fell in love with it.Our tatses are very similar.
Beth says
Thanks so much Cheryl! The gray rug is from RugsUsa and is the Satara Edison Rug in Nickel.

I just painted my living room Dorian Gray and the hallway and entry in mindful gray. Now I need to paint all trim and doors do you recommend semi gloss enamel ultra pure white or some sort of off white. confused about cool and warm colors and trim everyone has an opinion. My kitchen cabs are white with a gray and white counter and backsplash not installed yet but i was thinking a white subway with dark grout. Color in the kitchen I have a soffit above cabs and was wanting to add some color i was thinking sea salt. I love green. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
Beth says
I like Sherwin Williams white trim paint and I also like Benjamin Moore’s White Dove for trim. My preference is semi-gloss for trim in pure white. Your other choices sound lovely!
Holly says
Absolutely love this room! Where did you purchase your sofa? I’m looking for one exactly like that and I’m having a hard time finding one!
Beth says
Thanks! The sofa is the Collins sectional from LaZBoy. We love it. It’s comfy and very easy to clean.
Jan says
I’m considering Dorian Gray to cover my tan walls. How was the coverage. Did you have to do 2 coats?
Beth says
I love the color! And yes, I always do two coats of paint because I think it looks best with full coverage.
Theresa says
Love it all! Where did you get the floral print chair?
Beth says
Thank you! The chairs were purchased from Target online a few years ago.
Teri says
Love the job you did on your living room! Where did you find your new rugs?
I’m so confused on rugs right now.. I love your choice and the layering..is the large rug a gray silver?? Thank you! Teri
Beth says
Thanks Teri! I found both rugs on RugsUSA during one of their 75% off sales. The gray trellis rug was a real steal but it’s not a high quality rug and will need to be replaced in another year or so. I don’t recommend it for a high traffic area. The cowhide rug has silver designs on it and was purchased maybe 4? years ago. It’s survived a lot of wear over the years and is a great accent piece.
Gilly @ Colour Saturated Life says
I love your living room especially the layering of those rugs, I think I may have rug envy as I have been looking for perfect rugs for my space and yours are just so beautiful.
Beth says
Thanks Gilly!
Betsy @ Happily Ever After, Etc. says
It’s amazing what a little bit of paint can do! I love your layerd rugs though! I think they’re my favorite!
Jennifer says
It is amazing that it’s the same couch but the difference in some pillow and paint can do! Crazy!
Britt says
LOVE those doors. So much work, but worth it. I also have my kitchen painted in SW seasalt and love it. Great job
Beth says
Thanks Britt! They definitely did take some effort but they weren’t at all hard or complicated to make. Just time-consuming. Thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂
Kaela says
Beth, I’ve been a long time follower and this update is beautiful! Really shows that it doesn’t have to cost a whole lot or change everything for a different look and feel. I would disagree with one sentence: “This wall went from fab to drab with the … herringbone doors…” I’m sure you meant it the other way around 🙂 Looking forward to the door tutorial!
Beth says
Ha! That is too funny. Good catch Kaela. 😉 I’ve actually received some really mixed reviews on the doors, so I know others would agree with my sentence as is. But I LOVE how they turned out so will be editing that sentence now! Thanks again for the catch and for visiting me.
Veronica says
Hey Beth,
Wow, what a drastic makeover!! Loved the color palette you choose. Totally fabulous 🙂
Gavin says
Hi Beth,
This is my first visit to your blog (thank you, Sherwin Williams Paint Week!), but I’m so glad to be here! Your project turned out great. I especially love the herringbone doors! Are you going to do a more detailed tutorial for those? I watched the video but would love to get some more up close photos and details (Type of wood? Glued? Do they stick out from the door frame?). Also, have you done these doors elsewhere in your house? If so, how do they hold up? Thanks!
Kate @ Chic on a Shoestring Decorating says
Hi Beth, This turned out so perfectly! I love all of your updates and especially the herringbone doors. It’s always amazing what a little paint can do! xoxo
Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality says
Hey, Beth, you knocked this one out! That is a great makeover and looks so inviting and coastal. The video was fun, I need to learn how to do videos like that. I know it was a lot of work, those doors….wow, they are fantastic. I can just see me doing all my plain Jane doors like that. Probably not going to happen, but it sure looks nice! Great job!
Beth says
Thanks friend! And thanks for coming over to leave a comment! We talk all the time and yet it’s still so fun to get a blog comment from a friend. 🙂 I’ll have to remember that and start paying it forward. Blog comments seem to be a dying breed!
Amy Peterson says
What an amazing transformation—it even made your sectional appear to change colors! Great job! Curious where you got your animal print rug–love it!
Beth says
Thank you! And I agree. The couch looks much less yellowish with the gray paint and accessories. The cowhide rug came from RugsUSA during one of their 75% off sales.
Rosy says

So, so pretty! I love the doors and gallery wall… oh heck, I love it all! Harmony is my favorite paint too! I keep trying out others but always come back to the Harmony.
Beth says
I’m so surprised that I’ve never used it before considering all of the Sherwin Williams gallons I’ve gone through! But yes, it was my favorite for wall coverage for sure.
jessica @fourgenerationsoneroof says
Love it Beth! The colors are beautiful and the doors and wall gallery are perfect for that wall ;).
Beth says
Thank you Jess!

Those are beautiful updates and I LOVE the herringbone doors! What a fantastic idea!
The end of the video is adorable too. You perfectly captured what the end of a project feels like.:)
Beth says
Ha! I was sooooo glad to have those doors done! That minute-long video was actually the work of several long days. It felt amazing to have the doors up and looking exactly how I pictured in my mind’s eye. Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit Jenna! I appreciate it. 🙂
