My family often teases me about how many Christmas trees I put up in our home each year. What can I say? I love to decorate for Christmas and the coziness created by twinkle lights just can’t be beat! Today I’m going to share with you my step by step process on how I decorate a tree easily and affordably! From shopping to styling, I’ll take you along on the process.
Tip 1: Know where to shop for affordable ornaments and Christmas decor.
When it comes to shopping for Christmas decor, there are a plethora of great options! Christmas Tree Shops is always one of the first stores I stop to shop. They consistently have cute and extremely affordable curated collections of ornaments, tabletop decor, greenery, wreaths, lanterns, pillows, throws, and more. I know some of you unfortunately do not have a Christmas Tree Shops store near you, but if you’re ever visiting near one, I encourage you to pop in and check it out! They offer decor for every season—not just for Christmas as the name implies. I purchased all of the decor pictured below from their Frosty Elegance collection, currently in-stores.
Tip 2: Stick your Christmas tree in the corner of the room and don’t worry about decorating the parts no one can see!
This might be a bit of an unconventional money-saving tip, but you don’t have to spend money decorating something no one is going to see! I often place my Christmas tree in the corner of a room and never worry about placing ornaments on the back of the tree. Simply decorate the portions you can easily see when walking around the tree and skip the parts that aren’t easily visible!
Tip 3: Use rolls of inexpensive ribbon to fill in a tree and to add color, dimension, and texture.
Christmas Tree Shops currently has rolls of 8 yards wired ribbon priced at $1.99 a roll. I purchased three rolls of blue and white patterned ribbon and was able to fill the entire tree. When it comes to placing ribbon on your tree, there are several methods to choose from. I prefer to cut my ribbon into 20-24″ strips and tuck each end of the ribbon into the branches to create loops. Simply bob and weave your pieces of cut ribbon throughout the tree to give the illusion of a continuous ribbon stream.
Tip 4: Fill your tree with mostly colored Christmas balls and just a few specialty ornaments.
Specialty ornaments can be pricey. Start by filling the tree with mostly inexpensive ball ornaments before placing your special ornaments on the tree. For this tree, I purchased a total of 32 ball ornaments, five glittery snowflakes, three beaded trees, and nine ceramic houses. I like to have an odd number of specialty ornaments and place them on the tree in a zigzag fashion.
Tip 5: Add elements of faux and real, consumable and durable, throughout the room!
I frequently recommend combining both faux and real greenery and flowers when decorating. It’s also a great idea to combine both consumable and durable decor in other areas of the room! For example, combining your everyday dishes with a seasonal paper napkin and salad plate is an easy and affordable way to create a festive dining table.
On top of last season’s snowflake placemats (see more of them here in my Christmas Tree Shop Woodland Glam Holiday Table Setting), I placed an everyday white dinner plate, paper napkin, and paper plate from the Frosty Elegance collection.
Paper products are an affordable tabletop decoration that also give the convenience of less time in the kitchen and more time with your guests!
Tip 6: Think outside the box for your table centerpiece!
I love to think outside the box when creating my table centerpiece. A fresh cut tree from the woods placed in a jar of water inside a decorative lantern becomes the perfect focal point! I’ve used storage containers, watering cans, ice buckets, lanterns, and even trash cans as vases for my centerpieces. This white snowflake lantern from Christmas Tree Shops is the perfect base for my mini tree!
Tip 7: Add a few seasonal touches to existing everyday decor.
My open shelves in my breakfast room are beautiful and functional. They house dishware I use when entertaining, and I often change them up seasonally.
By adding a few cute blue accessories from the Frosty Elegance collection to the shelves I am able to tie the room together!
All of the Christmas decor, and most of the dish decor was purchased at Christmas Tree Shops. Isn’t this Santa so cute? I love all of the ornate detail!
Tip 8: Use ribbon to add cheer to other simple areas in the room.
Design is always in the details! I keep silverware, paper and cloth napkins, and other tabletop necessities in large canisters in our breakfast room. To give them some festive cheer, I created mini wreaths from wire leaf ribbon and added them as tags with blue ribbon. Simple touches like this are not time consuming, easy to do, and help pull together your entire look.
