Today was a hard day. I woke up at 7am to a disgusting backed up kitchen sink and a leaking pipe. Spent the morning disassembling all the pipes under the kitchen sink and cleaning them all out by hand. Ew. It was so incredibly disgusting. If you think cleaning a bathroom drain is gross, try your kitchen sink pipes. So here’s a tip for you: Throw your eggshells in the trash and not the disposal. I spent forever cleaning sludge and eggshells out of those pipes. {shudder} I won’t bore you with the details of the rest of the day, but let’s just say that the sink was today’s “bright spot” compared with the rest. Oy vey!
So to de-stress (distress?) I did the following. LOL! Some girls get a pedicure and massage and some girls virtually paint their kitchen.
Just to remind you, here is what my kitchen currently looks like:
And here is what it will (sort of) soon look like:
I love it. I have a very special friend coming over in a week to help make this a reality. You know her well and she is just the girl for the job! Can’t wait :). Things will be looking brighter soon…if not in my day-to-day then at least in my kitchen!

I’m real imprssed with your plumbing skills! I bet not many women have done all that, including me… wendy

Oh Beth don’t paint those cabinets I LOVE your kitchen….but I know we all like a change…..and you have great taste so it will look FAB I’m sure….
Sounds like a YUCKY time you had today……
All the best,
Kathy 🙂
Danielle @ Transforming Home says
No! Don’t paint those beautiful wood cabinets – they are gorgeous! I know it will still look fabulous once you are done, but you are one of the few great bloggers left that doesn’t have white kitchen cabinets….and that’s a good thing…

Haydee says
LOVE the white…bright brings out the countertops beautifully…not to mention the beautiful backsplash. Can’t wait for the reveal!
me says
don’t do it!!!!!! ilove what you have already!
Sarah @ Redhead in Ruffled Flats says
I don’t know why I am just finding your blog, but I just wanted to let you know that I love it! It seems I came just in time because I’m a sucker for white cabinets (especially when the room already has a super adorable vintage feel that I love). I can’t wait to see the results!
The Tall Chick says
Can’t wait to see it! Your “play” kitchen looks fab already!!! 🙂 And it wouldn’t be the fabulous Miss Mustard Seed coming over, would it?!?!? Also hoping things get better for you. I can only imagine if the sink was the highlight of the day. Ugg, I’ve been having one of those weeks, too.
Maryann @ Domestically-Speaking says
Ok… you’re making me a bit jealous over here! Can you send your mystery painting guest my way when you’re done? I’d love my cabinets to be cream’ified!
Hoping your tomorrow is a much better day!
Beth @A to Z says
Well, since it’s my kitchen ladies, I’m painting it! I’ve thought about it for 3yrs now and I personally love the look of white cabinets w/ black countertops. (Those are granite countertops so they will NOT be replaced anytime soon.)
Jeannette Carriere says
I to love the dark cabinets they are so gorgeous. It goes well with the style of your house. The bright white doesn’t look so good with the dark counter tops.I would put stained glass in the open cabinet and go with a lighter counter top.
The kitchen does look warmer with the darker cabinets.
Bridget says
I think the dark cabinets look better than the white. They look like nice wood and the kitchen looks more warm than the white. Just my humble opinion.
Jeannie says
Pls. don’t paint them….hope it’s not too late…..why not paint the walls first for a change???
Heidi Lambeth says
Go for it! It will look so good.
Cara says
Beth,
Glad your home, but not so glad you came home to stinky sink issues. But if I know you, you got – er done and the sink is back in working order. (and probably smelling much better too!)
Love the idea of painting your cabinets. We painted ours last year and put a mocha glaze over them and I would not ever go back. Course my cabinets were not new or pretty to start with.
Can’t wait to see!
CherylM. says
I have to agree with Jean & Christine. I think the dark cabinets look so much better than that white paint. It looks very sophisticated and classy as is!
stephanie says
I am dying to paint all the cabinets in my kitchen and bathrooms white. I love how the gray door goes so well with your plans for the kitchen. Can’t wait to see your finished photos.
christine says
I am with Jean,I like the kitchen the way it is.Just a suggestion, but so many people have white have you thought of a rich greige? It looks very sophisticated.Like you.:)
Andrea White says
Ok….I don’t think I’m going to put anything down my disposal anymore……I keep hearing awful stories from so many…..ugggg….about your kitchen…..Wow…so pretty…I can’t wait to see the transformation…..I have been “saying” for nearly 2 years that I am going to paint my cabinets…..I guess I’m scared to begin…..and frankly wasn’;t sure what colors I wanted…..I had no idea that sherwin williams offered this….perfect.
sharon says
Where did you purchase the HOME plaque ?
ToTheMoonandBack says
WOWZA! I can’t wait for your reveal! Note to self, no more eggshells in the sink:)
Jean Leonard Cox says
I love your kitchen the way it looks now! Not sure I like the white cabinets…of course, just my opinion. But I do think your kitchen is up there with some of the nicest I’ve seen lately. I like the stainless steel with the darker cabinets and the way it all looks. If you think it is dark, add some under cabinet lighting for some added light.
Regards,
Julia says
I always crush my egg shells and put them in my compost. It’s great for the soil. Too bad about your backed up sink but at least you can fix it. Hooray for you. You did a great virtual paint job. JB
Dixie Redmond says
Aw on the stinky pipes! I’ve had that happen.
I really like your kitchen virtually painted. It’s something I want to do, too. I have dark cabinets going on. 🙂
Becki says
I once had a dinner party and the garbage disposal backed up. Glad they were all good friends because one of the guys was lying on the floor under the sink fixing it! Don’t put celery down the sink either!!!
Hope the rest of your week is fabulous!
Marianne@Songbird says
Oh that kitchen is going to look so wonderful. Can’t wait! And sorry to hear about all of your water and drainage issues. You really have been having a tough time. I wish I could just hop on over and help you out, I’d attack those drains in a flash for you.
cheryl says
oooo – super exciting. (not the yucky pipes – sorry you had to go through that!!!!)
i’m really liking what you have planned.
can’t wait to see the final results.
off to put some vinegar and bi-carb down my sinks now……
cheryl xox.
Jenny says
It’s going to look beautiful! Can’t wait to see it in action!
Martina @Northern Nesting says
WOW your kitchen is going to look amazing and I love how light and bright the white cabinets make it!
Susan says
I always put eggshells down the sink, and run the disposal. Will I still clog my sink??
Elaine says
ugh. sorry you had such a bad day! Can’t wait to see the kitchen revamp!
Kelley says
I don’t even let parsley go down my kitchen drains! I put one of those wire mesh drain strainers in each drain and then, WACK! WACK! WACK! all the gunk collected in it into the kitchen trash bag. This has really helped my kitchen drains (for thirty years and twenty moves) stay clog-free!
Anticipate the “new” kitchen!
Jean @ Flower Hill says
It’s going to look great! Keep looking at the bright side of things!
Jenny says
That’s going to look awesome!
Oh and I have done the exact same thing with the egg shells and disposal. It was Easter and I had a few DOZEN eggs that I was making egg salad with. Well, I wasn’t thinking and did it over the sink. Long story short, we ate Easter lunch with a backed up sink and then the boys got to work on it. LOL!
Carly Drake says
Wow! Can you actually download a picture of your room and virtually paint it? You’ve posted this at the perfect time – my family is eager to paint two rooms in our house, but we have no idea what colors yet! Awesome find! Thanks for sharing.
Jessica says
It’s going to look fabulous! That stinks ….all the sink sludge stuff 🙁
