This snow is made up of small little gel beads. You mix the powder with water and stir and stir until the beads rehydrate and look like snow. They feel weird and they are incredibly messy. I think this stuff would be great to mix in with your container plants to hold water in the soil longer. In fact, that is exactly what I plan on doing with the rest of this stuff!
But today, I had a big bowl of gellified goo with nothing to do. So I did what any crafty maven would do… Dipped some pinecones in it and made snow-covered, Ballard knock-off ornaments!
The little gel beads will loose their moisture and turn back to powder, but for now, they look pretty and sparkly on the tree.
Here is the comparison:
If you don’t happen to have a bunch of fake snow lying about, (What? You don’t???) I think you could use sea salt to create the same effect…or glitter…but that’s too predictable and boring :). I like the idea of salt better.
Congrats to Jenny from Studio J for winning the Scentsy Giveaway! If you didn’t win, you still have time to get your Scentsy orders in for Christmas! Also, don’t forget to enter for your chance to win some cute and comfy Whooga Ugg boots.
OHHHH I have two jars of that painfully messy snow stuff laying around, now I know what I am going to do with it!
This is my first visit to your blog. Thanks for showing how to make snow for pine cone ornaments. The snow we have outside would'nt last long in the house. lol
I joined your followers. JB
awww Beth thank you!!!!!! I didn't get over to read your blog yesterday was swamped around here! YAY for Scentsy and YAY for such beautiful ornaments and garland! Gorgeous girl!
Okay I swear I'm not trying to pimp my blog, but I have a tutorial on making fake snow from soap.
http://realmountainvalues.com/2010/11/soap-tree-flocking/
Very easy to clean up b/c it is made from, well, soap.
But to copy the ballards look you might try "Twinklets Diamond Dust", It's thicker and more irregular than glitter. Plus on 14 oz jar was around $10 and I have been using it for 3 Christmases and have 3/4 of it still left.
Wonder where your MIL got the snow because I do like the way it catches the light. I might have to try the salt idea too.
These came out great! I've been trying to conjur up some kind of fake snow to sprinkle on pine pine cones, perhaps epsom salt would work too?
You know what I love about you? You always come up with things I've never heard of girl! And I get around, too. (Wait. I didn't mean it like that.) What a fun idea. WE don't get much snow around here in the Pac. NW, so maybe I'll make some and we can play with it and pretend!! Thanks for sharing.
Very interesting…let me know how it works on the plants!
XO,
Jane
Loves it Beth! Like the idea of salt too…I was thinking sugar, but then I thought ants, NOPE no good. This is why I read your blog, I would mess up all the time!
Even just the pinecones make a nice ornament, Beth! What about Epsom salts? I used some of that as "snow" on a tray I did with candles.
Aren't you clever and that is really unique! Oh girl… you will have to check out my blog. I did a PB garland and used glass instead of plastic!!!! I thought they were plastic!!!! After vacuuming up three shattered ornaments off my front porch, I could have just cried! Would you take apart, return and start over or hot glue? I would love your advice!
Very cute! I like the salt idea too.
I never saw that fake snow before. I should get some for my g'son down south, he would love it.
Can't wait to see the rest of your tree! 😉
Love them! I think that margarita salt would work a bit easier than sea salt since it's bigger. And since most of us have margarita salt on hand… hehehe…
Love it! I should buy a snow making kit for my little guys! They would love it. We have to drive at least 2hrs to get to any snow! Love the pine cone idea!
what a great idea. I've never seen a 'snow making' kit before…love the results!
You love taking the long route too he. I used sprayed mine with snow from a can, but yours look more authentic. And you have the added bonus of making your little guy happy.
And yes, I think it will work wonders for your container plants, it is exactly like that stuff by the looks of it.
