This gourmet sausage burger recipe combines sweet and savory flavors with a fiery kick! Johnsonville Grillers Original Bratwurst are combined with grilled pineapple, toasted coconut, avocado, jalapeno bacon, and served on a brioche bun.
My boys had their last day of school today, so in celebration of the beginning of summer and National Burger Day I decided to grill some gourmet Hawaiian Sausage Burgers! This sausage burger recipe was inspired by a conversation I recently had with my sister. We were chatting about our favorite “grill recipes” and she told me about this amazing burger she saw on a restaurant review show. When she described all of the delicious ingredients–sausage, pineapple, avocado, and toasted coconut–I knew I had to try and make my own!
In place of traditional ground beef, I used Johnsonville Grillers in Original Bratwurst. Have you seen these before? I found them in the frozen food kiosk at my local Walmart. The flavors are already packed in the sausage and the patties come ready for the grill so grilling for a crowd is a breeze. They are available in Cheddar Cheese & Bacon, Swiss Cheese and Mushroom, Steakhouse Onion, or Original Bratwurst.
Ingredients
To make these Hawaiian Sausage Burgers you will need the following:
- Johnsonville Grillers Original Bratwurst
- Brioche buns
- leaf lettuce
- canned or fresh pineapple rings (grilled)
- ripe avocado
- red onion
- jalapeno bacon
- toasted coconut
- favorite hot sauce (I used this one.)
Cooking Directions:
Pre-cut all of your toppings before grilling. Toast coconut over low heat, stirring continually until coconut is golden brown. To grill pineapple, place 3 tablespoons of melted butter in a ziploc back along with a few dashes of hot sauce and 1 tablespoon of honey. Allow pineapple rings to marinate in this mixture for at least 30 minutes before grilling. Grill pineapple over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes per side or until grill marks are visible. Grill the Johnsonville Grillers Original Bratwurst according to package directions. Fry bacon according to package directions.
Assembly Directions:
Assemble burgers in the following order:
- Brioche bun bottom
- leaf lettuce
- Johnsonville Grillers Original Bratwurst
- grilled pineapple
- toasted coconut
- sliced avocado
- red onions
- jalapeno bacon
- hot sauce (optional)
- Brioche bun top
I served the burgers with a side of sweet potato fries and extra slices of grilled pineapple. This burger is so flavorful that it doesn’t require a lot of sauce, but my youngest thought mayo mixed with a bit of hot sauce was the perfect accompaniment. Feel free to use your favorite condiments.
I hope this recipe inspires you to celebrate National Burger Day on May 28th in a unique way! Celebrating with Johnsonville Grillers puts a fun spin on traditional burger recipes. Whether you are hosting a crowd, or simply enjoying the long weekend with family, these simple and easy Grillers are a definite crowd pleaser.
