If today was a “Hooked on ______ Day”, I would have to say I am hooked on dark wood. And not in a good way. Everything on my lower level is too matchy-matchy, and it is driving me crazy-crazy. Take a look at the picture below which I present to you as Exhibit A. Note how the kitchen cabinets match the bar stools which match the table and chairs in the breakfast bay which match the fireplace which match the dining room furniture. Phew. I rest my case. Or better yet, I should say that I diagnose my case as a bad case of the matchy-matchy. Fortunately for all of us, I know my way around a can of spray paint.I now present to you, Exhibit B. I first assaulted the table with a can of Heirloom White, but it looked too, well….heirloomy for my taste. I then used my free can of Duron paint in Marshmallow White and it was too marshmallowy. I hated it and sort of wanted to eat it all at the same time.
Finally, I resorted to my craft paints and just started mixing and streaking and glazing different shades of brown, champagne and white. Ahhhh. Looking better.
Then, I lightly distressed the legs with a sandpaper sponge and was thrilled with the end result.
One table down, several other items to go. Next, I will attack the chair. I’m thinking black for that one. Join me for the journey to the cure for the matchy-matchy!

I love the end result! I, too, can get stuck in matchy-matchy land. I am currently on a quest to break myself of that habit. 🙂
I love this look so much! After I painted the bottom of my dining table though, I just couldn't bring myself to sand it, lol. I figure I'll just wait a few years for it to get nice and banged up. I also have 2 end tables that I bought off craigslist that I've been debating painting. Seriously, I've been debating with myself for 5 or 6 months. I really can't make up my mind to paint or not.
I'm having the same problem with monotone cherry wood everywhere! Maybe I'll try refinishing some pieces in two-tone like you did 🙂
I just found your blog when googling around for beadboard ideas & I found your room that you did with beadboard wallpaper. I am ASTOUNDED!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! We just bought a house & I just told my husband that we HAVE to do this somewhere in our house.
Lover your coffee table redo-I will be checking back often for updates! Thanks for sharing your creativity!
The table looks great. I love the color – you had me laughing at your marshmallow comment!

i have to matchy matchy stuff as well!
your idea is great! i too, like white & dark wood mixture. at least you are admitting to be in the to matchy matchy group! most of us would never admit to it.
Looks pretty! Great job 🙂
I always look forward to seeing what project/transformation you come up with next! Your home looks so inviting and lovely. Thank you for popping my blog too! Miki
Love the coffee table and baskets! Just between us…those feathers are not real. They are silk…smiles~
Hi Beth- I like that you mixed up the finishes and went w/an antiquey look on the legs. You are gonna be diligent in your effort to get rid of the dark, aren't you? *grin*

Great table, Beth! Love the claw and ball feet. I have that on my dining room hutch. I love the dark top with the white bottom. You did a great job!
Love it Beth! It totally compliments the wood and lightens up the whole room…great job!

I've been thinking the SAME thing about my 'junk store' find coffee table! I just can't decide WHAT to do with it. White legs? or totally paint it black or or or …You get the picture! LOL
I LOVE yours and can't wait to see what else you 'mis-match' in the room.
Looks great. Job well done.

Very nice! Love the way it looks distress and the baskets underneath are cute. I am inspired!
Love it.. Love the red in the kitchen. Unfortunately my hubby is not cooperating me on the colors i Like.
I also adore dark wood. I want to do do the same look in my bathroom on the vanity, just haven't done it.
Looks Super!! Your helping to motivate me to paint my table…keep it up!!!
That is just beautiful!
