How to Decorate Series {day 12}: Decorating with Flowers by Honey We’re Home

Welcome to Day 12 of our How to Decorate Series!  Today we will hear from Megan from Honey We’re Home.  If you are unfamiliar with Megan’s blog, I highly recommend you check out her house tour! Here is a sneak peek at three of my favorite Honey We’re Home spaces and projects :).

These are often overlooked but add a huge impact to any space. You will see these on almost every page of any home decor mag or catalog. Yes, peeps, we’re talking about flowers!

Hi all! I’m Megan from Honey We’re Home sharing one of my favorite ways to add life and personality to any room in your home.

I love to decorate with flowers, and while the real ones are certainly preferable, I admit that I’m pretty smitten with some of the faux ones I’ve seen these days too!  I usually buy a small bunch of fresh flowers from my grocery store every two weeks and keep them on the kitchen island and/or breakfast table since that’s where I am likely to see them the most.  If you have a similar high-traffic area in your home, it’s so nice to have a pretty arrangement of flowers that make you smile when you see them.  Most grocery stores sell smaller bunches of flowers for less than $5.  Carnations (which come in a wide variety of colors) are $4 at my store and they last well over a week.  Even a stem or two placed in a bud vase by your kitchen or bathroom sink is a nice addition.

But, I also love the pay-once-never-die option that faux flowers bring- can’t beat it- especially with hydrangeas that die so quickly! 

Here’s a peek at how flowers (real or fake) can liven up your home. (Just for fun, let’s see if you can guess whether the flowers in each pic are real or faux :).

  • White roses.

Faux. Purchased these from Pottery Barn.  They are a new addition to our kitchen that I love because of the height and color they add.  I have 4 stems here and the vase is from Target.
  • Purple flowers in bud vase.

Real. I love to keep a couple of stems by the kitchen sink.  It seems to make washing dishes more enjoyable! 🙂
  • Lilies by the sink.

  • Red roses in bud vases.

Real. These little bud vases were $1 at Wal-Mart.  Pairing two vases of flowers together makes quite an impact, especially with red roses!
  • Purple snapdragons.

Faux. Crate & Barrel.  I’m planning to put it in this.  I can never keep real orchids alive.
  • White flowers.

Faux. Pottery Barn?? I can’t remember, I’ve had them forever.  The grass stems are from Pier 1.  The vase is from World Market.
  • Daisies.

Real. Don’t forget about unexpected places to keep flowers.  These are in my home office and the blue vase makes it even more fun. Daisies are another super-inexpensive real flower.

So did anyone guess them all correctly? 😉  Anyone surprised by the answers? I adore fresh flowers in the home, but I rarely splurge on them.  But when I do, I always feel happier.  Flowers, realistic faux or real, make such a huge impact in any space.  But let’s emphasize the realistic part of the faux here. We’ve all seen faux go very, very wrong.  I love that Megan showed us how to tastefully add some faux to the decor and have it work!  Also as an aside, I recently read a tip on Richella’s blog that if you add a few drops of bleach to your flower water your flowers will last longer!  Anyone try it?

We have an extensive perennial garden with something new blooming every few weeks from late March (daffodils) through September (I don’t know what they are, but they look chrysanthemum-y only they come back every year). The previous owner put it all in and since I know ZIP about gardening, I’ve just crossed my fingers every year hoping stuff comes back again. I never really thought about bringing those flowers inside! What a cheap easy way to decorate! We’ll have coneflowers in the bathroom tomorrow, monarda on the kitchen table and lilies on the mantle. Thank you so much for the great idea!

  2. I love, love, love fresh flowers. My husband is pretty good at getting them for me on special occasions, and I occasionally pick them up for myself at the grocery.

    As soon as we win the lottery, I’ll have a fresh delivery every week!

  6. totally didn’t guess right! LOL But realizing my super bad need for some flowers in my house right now, especially because I’m having a girls night next week and all my lovely ladies can totally appreciate some floral inspiration!

  8. my mom just brought me peonies from the garden 🙂 I try and use faux sparingly….when they get old and dingy they remind me of an old hospital or something 🙁

  9. This is some great advice, Megan! I really couldn’t see much difference between the real and the faux. I use the faux big time in the winter when fresh flowers are so expensive, mostly in the background as opposed to a traffic area. It’s nice to hear that others use them in their decor!   14. Megan, I’m sooo on your page! I love flowers and try to strike the balance between some economic fresh blooms and my tried and true faux. I have some fave faux workhorse hydrangeas that make the rounds in my home. Never know where they’ll turn up next! Thanks for the Friday morning eye candy, girls! Beth, your series continues to rock!

  15. I always have faux flowers up in our home. The two tricks I use are A) know which flowers work in silks (calla lilies, hydrangeas, etc.) and which don’t (tulips!), and B) keep the arrangements simple (one type of flower per arrangement).

    Megan inspired me to get some real flowers into the house too! Might have to pick some up from the Farmer’s Market or cut some from the yard.
