I’ve complained to you about my kitchen all year long. Well instead of painting the walls (which I will, I pinky swear), and painting the cabinets (which now I probably have to), I decided to complicate matters by adding a backsplash. It’s up. It’s happening. There is no backing out. There’s no changing it. I’m married to it. So, now it’s up to me to figure out how to make this disaster work.
Then I started grouting. I had really wanted a gray grout but accidentally picked up “Alabaster”. I was feeling lazy and really didn’t feel like taking a 40 minute round trip to Home Depot. Why not some white grout? That might just lighten things up in here and look great?
I won’t show you the whole thing but trust that so far it is not looking “great”. I’m determined to make it work though, so I’ll show you what I come up with.
Why can’t anything ever be easy?

I know it doesn't help you much now, but just in case others get inspired to do something similar with river rock, there's an easier option… Natural Stone Outlet offers a variety of pebbles and rocks pre-attached to a mesh backing just like traditional tiles. And the sheets are kinda puzzle-piece-shaped to fit together seamlessly.
We used the River Rock Pebble Tile for the floor of the shower in our old master bath and leaving that behind when we moved a few months ago was enough to make me cry.

I know you will make it work! You always do!
Does this mean you don't have to move? I hope so.

You'll figure it out! I like the idea though. Out of curiosity what do you think of brick backsplashes in the kitchen?

Hang in there. Never base your opinion on a project if you are only halfway through. I will turn out to look fab. I have faith in you.

If anyone can knock this out of the ballpark, it is you, my friend. Can't wait to see the end result!

It is really hard to judge w/ just a close up and not the 'whole picture'.
Sometimes these things push you in a new direction that you never would have imagined. (in a good way)
Can't wait to see the final result. I see the potential!

just so you know, it's never easy around here either, at least that's when my hubby gets involved a project!
Can't wait to see what you've done.

I love this stuff. I have not used it but my brother has…it is so nice. Looking good and great job.

Beth, rock and grout are totally paintable if you desire to lighten things up. 🙂 Paint and a soft glaze… yup! That's what I'd do. But that also depends on what you do to your cupboards of course.
Keep at it! We'll help you out. 🙂

ARe you wiping off extra grout as you go with a wet sponge? To me it looks like the stones aren't very shiny and there's maybe too much grout between them, covering the stones? Maybe a sealant next?
Just a guess. I'm by no means a professional. lol

I was hoping it would look earthy, woodsy, spa-like. I bought some stain and it's better. I'm still thinking I made a big mistake here, but we'll see!

You are one brave soul! I am a total chicken when it comes to this type of stuff, so I'm totally inspired! Can't wait for the finished result… I'm betting it will be fabulous! Loving the idea of it so far!

There is grout stain out there! My SIL did the same thing with this rock tile-she thought it looked like the beach-and she lives in the woods. We didn't buy it thoug-we used a regular oil based stain from Sherwin WIlliams.

I think you're awesome b/c you have such a can-do attitude! Instead of pouting b/c you don't like it, you're tackling the project. Yay for you. 🙂
