A few days ago, I shared with you all of my unfinished projects. Well thanks to a recent bout of insomnia, I can cross cage lighting off of my to do list! I was inspired by this picture below by Hudson Goods, and decided to make my own.
I purchased shades for $1.99 at the Christmas Tree Shop and cut the fabric off of each.
Then using 18 gauge galvanized steel wire (found at Home Depot or Lowes) I added some additional wire between the frame and at the bottom to create the “flower” look. You can see me in action below if you push play. Don’t try to mess with your sound. No, I’m not talking in the video. No idea why I thought it was a good idea to play mime. I just wasn’t feeling chatty last night :).
***Update: My other lighting experiment worked! To see how it turned out click here.***
Too stinkin cool!! Sure – – you scratched off one of your to-do's but it really didn't go away!! It multiplied and came to all of our lists!!!
Awesome Job!!

Gorgeous, I love it! Only now I'm crying because I saw about 8 of these shades at the thrift store last week for 50 cents each and didn't grab them. Wonder if they are still there…
Ok…that rocks! Very clever to use a lamp shade and add more wire–cagey indeedy!!
I LOVE your cage lights & LOVE that you said "Cagify"!

Hi Beth, Just wanted to let you know I featured your lights today. Thanks again for joining the Sunday Showcase Party – I greatly apprecite it! ~ Stephanie Lynn
That looks amazing, I am definitely going to try that!!!
I absolutely love this! I recently saw a similar shade at a high end boutique and loved it, but not the price. Thanks for sharing this fantastic project.
Hugs, Sherry
Hey Beth: thanks so much for doing the tutorial! I am adding to my 2 thousand miles long projects to do! π
Have a great week! xo
Love love love! I can't believe you used the $1.99 shades {so clever}. This is gorgeous! Thanks so much for joining the Sunday Showcase. Hope you have a wonderful week! ~ Stephanie Lynn
Those look great!
How cool are these???? love them!
I love this! They turned out really really great, you make it look so easy to bend wire!
Love it! I would never have thought of that and it looks so good.
Okay me again π I just saw another great tutorial for making paper clip chandeliers that don't look like anything homemade or paper clippy. Check it out: http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2010/06/make-a-fabulous-paper-clip-chandelier/
Looks to me like these are the perfect sitting-on-the-couch-keeping-your-hands-busy project that takes very little money but some serious time… but who knows? Maybe not?!
Can't wait to see what you do with your light (as well as the rest of the kitchen!)!
Beth–love this! And when you mentioned doing the other dome light fixture the same way it made me think of a couple tutorials I saw recently. Have you ever checked out dollarstorecrafts.com ? It's all about making great projects with things from the dollar store and they have recently featured at least 2 projects using dollar store wire plant hangers (like wire bowls that hang & have a lining). Here's the links http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2010/05/make-a-jute-wrapped-lampshade/ and http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2010/05/make-a-blingy-chandelier/
I thought these posts were so creative (mostly for all the other ideas they bring to mind with the same base), and might give you some good starting points for your next cage project. Good luck! Can't wait to see the finished project!!
Hi Judi!
It didn't take long at all. It was completed in an evening. Granted I had insomnia last night, so I was able to complete all the coats of spray paint (which honestly took the longest). It's very, very doable!
Thanks for stopping by,
I love it!!!
WOW beth, this is an amazing transformation! you really did a phenomenal job…how long did this take you?! i LOVE this look…you have inspired me to try this. now i just have to decide where i "need" a new light fixture!
judi π
Very cool! Love your ingenuity!! π
Wonderful job. Leave it up to you to figure out what to do with those old 'cage' lampshades. I had some miny ones in my hands just this week, but couldn't come up with a use so left them behind. I am temped to go back for them now.
I really love it, can't wait to see what you do to the other lamp.
Although I really don't wish insomnia to you, it must feel good to get some projects finished. Maybe I should try not sleeping because my projects are still haunting me.
I like it, Beth!! π Very very cool.
Thanks everyone! Chis, yes, I'm a huge dork for not talking :). Willoughbywhimsy, cage dancers in my kitchen??? Kathy, can't get anything past you, girlfriend! I made a little circle out of wire and attached it to the top of the shade. The circle slips around the screwy-thingy to hold it in place. I also spray painted the screwy thingy and thing the light bulb screws into. It was cream colored before–and ugly.
What a fantastic idea – love it!
Beth, that's really a pretty cool way to update a light fixture. Good job!
wow, I love this. what a great way to use the wire framework of a lampshade. Awesome how to!
LOVE this! It looks so awesome! Great GREAT idea!
Thanks for sharing the "how to".
Lou Cinda π
Wow, Beth! Nice job doing more loops and curves on these ~ that turned out great. My light over my table has lights that the shade sits on like yours {the tiffany shades}. How did you get the regular shade to stay up? It looks like you removed the original bulb clip part off as well.
Beth-
Your talent never ceases to amaze me!! I was a bit concerned at first when I read "cage lighting"…all that came to mind was those go-go dancers in cages of yore..lol. So very unique!
Awesome!!! Congrats on the Great Cage Lighting!!!
LOVE IT! Great job! I'm now looking at the light fixtures in my kitchen thinking…hmmmmmmmmm.
π
I love it!
I love the cage shades! They are a fabulous update to your light fixture. I'd love to do something like that but if I tried to replace a stained glass shade, I think my husband wouldn't speak to me for a month. He really likes stained glass.
genius!
The fact that you didn't talk in the video is hilarious. When you pointed at the end, I cracked up! I love the way they turned out. It's just too cool!
Love it! I like it so much better!
I have a love/hate relationship with all the inspiration I find!
Now I have to put this on my to do list which is already a mile long!
Great job! I love'em!
Beth,
Adding the flower shaped wire was so clever! Bravo!
oh my goodness Beth! they are amazing! what a great idea and i cannot wait to try it out! thanks for your never ending inspiration!
Very nicely done! They look great!
Beth,
This is so clever! I truly love your creative genius!!!
Happy Monday,
Laura
Oh my gosh, I love them! Awesome!!
{Rebekah}
Woman!!!! You are awesome!!!!! Why you don't have a t.v. show, I will never know!
Very cool! It looks awesome! Very creative idea!!
Off topic – but what video editing software do you use??
Nice job and so creative. It is really inspiring to see how bloggers can see something and replicate it. I clearly do not have that vision.
Gorgeous! Now I have 'ONE' more thing on my 'To Do List'! π
Perfect! My husband and I will soon be building a house, and this is the style of lighting I am searching for. Thank you for sharing your great idea!
