Candy Corn Garland (Cheater’s Version)

I felt that my Halloween mantel still needed a little somethin’ somethin’.  So when Sarah tweeted this pic from Woman’s Day, I was inspired to add a bit more bling to the thing.

But, I’m not crazy people.  Well, not entirely anyways.  I do NOT have time to sit and string a gazillion candy corns and even if I did, I wouldn’t want to.  I like instant gratification, and there is nothing instant when it comes to me and needle and thread.

To create my candy corn garland in twenty minutes or less, I busted out my trusty glue gun and some twine.
I lined up all the worthy candy corns and ate a ton of the “unworthies”.  It’s amazing how many deformed, broken, and imperfect candy corns are in a bag! Ugh.  I feel a bit nauseous just thinking about it.  Too much candy. I swear these things much have MSG in them or something because I always eat too many!

I used my coffee mug to keep the string taut.  I put a bead of glue on the string and working very quickly  placed the candy corns on the string in twos and threes.  Once they were all glued in place, I flipped the strand over and ran another bead of glue across the garland for extra security.

And Voila! Cuteness in around 20 minutes!

I will throw this out at the end of the month, but if you were to keep the garland longer you would need to spray it with clear spray paint.  Do I fear that my children or the dog might munch on my garland when I’m not looking?  Why yes.  Yes, I do. I’m praying for the best right now and will inform you in the case of the worst!  (Considering my dog is diabetic and receives insulin shots twice a day, I think eating this strand might just do him in!  My mother would be so happy. She’s not a fan.  Poor doggie!)

By the way, lately I’ve received several, “I totally did that same project back in 1992 and it looked better” kind of comments.  Okay, well not exactly in those words, but by ALL MEANS if you’ve done a similar project go ahead and leave a link in your comment for all of us to see.  I’d love to see it.  Inspiring each other is what it’s all about!

  1. I just had an idea for people (including myself) without a mantle to drape across the garland…drape on the arms of your chandelier! I have a casual looking chandelier in my dining area that would look so cute with this. I wonder if I would like it anymore to alternate the direction the corn pointed…hmm or just grab some and slap ’em on there whatever way they’ll fit. haha Thanks for making this project easier!

  2. I love it. I am sitting here stringing candy corn for my little halloween tree. they keep breaking. Were’s my glue gun.

  3. Hmmm… now you have me wondering if this technique would work with those little orange sugar pumpkin candies. Because, you know, they are just so much tastier than candy corn ….

Not that I'd eat any while making the garland. Not I.

  4. I love this idea! I am planning on decorating tonight and this will be the perfect little project to get me in the moon.

  5. I feel like I say this all the time, but you are such a genuis! I'd never want to string nine million candy corns but love the look of the garland. Gotta love hot glue!

  6. You smart smart girl!! I love it!

I did see that link when Sarah tweeted it, but all I could think of is how bad that would hurt my fingers. I never thought of the glue gun!

  7. It looks great! I made a candy corn topiary and tree courtesy of my blog stalking 🙂 This is too cute. I was thinking of mod-podging my candy corn topiary to "keep" it for next year. Is clear spray paint a better way to go?

  8. Looks great, another great use for a glue gun, which I just recently got! (I won't link to a photo of it this time…:) ha, ha!)

  9. Beth, that is just absolutely darling. I am a candy corn fanatic–every year I allow myself some, but I have to be careful not to buy too much, or I'll just eat them all and gain ten pounds in October. It's ridiculous–I can bite off just the white tip, then the yellow part, then the orange, in perfect sections. That indicates WAY too much practice with candy corn. I think I should make a garland with them; perhaps the hot glue would keep them out of my mouth!

Hope you're having a great fall!

  10. Love your candy corn garland! By the way, I have a question how long has your dog been diagnosed with diabetes and is the insulin shots helping? Our dog has been diagnosed and we are having to give him insulin shots twice a day. It's been about a month now and there is a little change but not a lot. Any info you could provide I would greatly appreciate. It's so hard!

    Have a wonderful day.

  11. It's really nice of the "one-uppers" to come out of the woodwork when people post projects, isn't it? 😉 LOVE THAT haha

Well, in 1992 I did NOT make candy corn garland, and even if I had, it wouldn't have looked as nice as yours 🙂 I appreciate your creativity!

    Happy Friday

  12. My favorite part of your post was the part about having received the "I did the same thing back in 1992, but better", comments! I laughed out loud! Good for you for just responding with "BY ALL MEANS, share your link!" Love it!
    Thanks for sharing.

  13. What a great way to do this fast! I remember Susie Harris had something similar last year (?) and thinking must have taken for-EVA! And isn't that why we blog? To steal other women's decorating ideas? No? Um, oops – that's one of my main reasons! Great job, hope your tummy isn't angry at you over it!

  14. I love the garland! I'm totally adding the idea to my "if God blesses my with a husband and I finally have a mantel to decorate" file. I'd want to try the stringing though…maybe trying to pre-drill with the smallest bit on the press? But I love how you found a quick way to do it!! You are too creative, Beth!

And how funny is this…last week one of my facebook friends posted your blog on the reception on fb. So that means someone about a mile from me is also reading your blog.

  15. That is really cute 🙂 I had to laugh though when you said it was making you nauseated just thinking about eating all those candy corn -that is the same thing I do with marshmellow peeps -eat them until I'm sick 🙂

  16. this looks adorable!

i don't even know if i could deal with handling those itty bitty corns to hot glue them. that size of stuff drives me insane. but the result is always so fun. same thing with stringing popcorn. drives me crazy.

got your email. thanks for all the info & it's a deal in november.
    😉

  17. I love it! I tried to make one too, unfortunately, my bad had nothing but misfit candy corns. Not one was good enough to make it for a garland. I may just have to buy another bag & try again. lol.

  18. "I totally did that same project back in 1992 and it looked better"

    LOLOL!

I think I would just sit there and eat the candy corn!

  19. well…I think your candy corn is fab! who cares that others can "do it better!".. as long as the finished result is the same. I love the time saving factor .. and did I mention "Brilliant" too? Good for you…you go girl!

  20. I love yours. I cheated and bought a Martha Stewart bat garland with a 50% off coupon from Micheals. Are you still having a mantle party ?

  21. you did a great job! And I know what you mean about eating too many candy corns every year! I do too! lol

  22. I love this idea! I strung gumdrops on string for Christmas and it was a nightmare! While it looks great and I keep it in my freezer to use every year, I think I took layers of skin off of my fingers. Painful! Hence the reason I use it every year. I will have to remember the glue gun. It looks great and you still have fingers left to feel other things. 🙂

  23. Laughed out loud at the "unworthies" comment. I bought some Brachs to fill a glass pumpkin…um, it's not so full anymore. :s Your garland looks great! 🙂

  24. Very cute! It adds just the right amount of color! And good luck to your doggy to help fight the temptation!

  25. So cute! If only I have a mantel 🙁 I will never understand people leaving rude comments on someone's inspiring blog. I think your garland is GORGEOUS!

  26. Adorable!! I love it. And so smart to make it like that. Good tips!

I shared it on my TT&J FB page and linked back to you 🙂

  27. Well, I've never done it and don't even remember ever seeing it and I sure like your easy version!!! It looks so cute!!! Hope your puppy stays away from it…my dogs literally love candy corn!!!

  28. I love it, perfect touch! I need a garland/banner for my mantle and I think I might need to copy your "cheaters method"! I use my glue gun for everything, it's very well loved 🙂

  29. I really like your garland! And dont ever worry about what your version looks like compared to someone elses. Yours is great and makes you happy – All the matters 🙂 !

  30. I totally did this project last year with needle and thread and it did NOT look better! Neither did my fingers which felt like bloody stumps after doing a garland half this size.

Great job on the glue gun garland. If I did this again I would absolutely use your method. It threw mine away too.

  31. Love the cheater's way!
I have out my glue gun (and candy corn)..I was making some 'art'…maybe I'll make some garland while I'm at it!?!?
