Asher’s preschool has been doing a themed unit on fairy tales for the past two weeks. All parents were asked to contribute a fairy tale snack for the fairy tale banquet. Since fairy tales are all about pretending, I contemplated making a pretend snack for Asher’s class. I also thought it might be nice if I could get some fairies to make the snack for me, or at least kick in a little fairy dust my way. But in the end I came up with this instead. Yes, I know…it’s a far, far cry from a pretend snack (and for the amount of time it took me I really could have used those fairies), but Asher’s sheer joy over the finished product made it worth it.
Well, sort of… He is getting to be quite the little perfectionist himself and was offering me cake decorating advice as he sat back licking up remnants of buttercream frosting from the bowl. “Uh, Mommy, I think that one needs a bit more hair and the crown looks crooked.” When I was completely finished he exclaimed enthusiastically, “Oh, Wow! But…hey…Mommy, where is my cupcake? Where are the ones with yellow hair? I want you to make some with yellow hair for me.” You know that I actually was thinking the same thing myself! But then I snapped out of it and told him that brown was better because it’s pure chocolate. This opposing line of reasoning seemed to satisfy his contrasting need for identification (a.k.a. vanity).
Aren’t they adorable? I was so proud to have been able to copy these guys from this genius of a lady here. I was also able to whip them up from all stuff I had on hand. Tip: Save random candies from Christmas parties, Valentines cards, etc. for such a time as this. The little crown candies were left over from the Christmas gingerbread house that the boys did.
Just in case you haven’t seen them from every angle yet and “ooooo’ed” and “aaaahhhhh’ed” to my satisfaction, here’s one more picture for you.
And here are the little royal rascals!
Last night after Zeph’s bath (and after all the royalty cupcake talk), Zeph disappeared half-dressed into his playroom. I kept calling him back to his room so that I could finish putting on his p.j.’s. When he came back in, this is what he was wearing :). I was so impressed that he dug this stuff out of the toy basket and suited up all by himself. He was so pleased with how tough he looked, and we were trying not to laugh too hard!
Here’s Asher this morning right before his party. (To his great dismay, we made him leave the sword at home. Didn’t want any princess, I mean dragon casualties today.)
On a completely random note, this is what was waiting for me on the kids’ chalkboard in the morning. There are some great advantages in having a thoughtful, artistic husband!
