Just by chance, I happened on a blog highlighting this fantastic program by Home Depot. My eldest kiddo just turned five, and I knew he’d be thrilled to have some special father/son time at The Work-guy Store. We never call it Home Depot. In our home, it is always The Work-guy Store. Asher has Asperger’s which is a mild form of autism. He has many sensory issues which include easy overstimulation in noisy warehouse environments. He also has trouble staying on task, focusing, and with fine motor coordination; therefore, I wasn’t sure how he’d do with this challenge. The program was FREE, so I figured there’d be no loss in trying. I am so pleased (and so proud) to say that Asher did great! Below you can see him proudly showing off his Message Center creation.
Besides getting the free kit and personal instructions on how to do the project, each child receives a little Home Depot apron, badge of completion, and certificate. Fantastic!
I thought Asher’s message board would be very cute in his room with a few minor embellishments. I painted it brown, mod-podged with scrapbook paper, and made some thumbtacks for the corkboard.
I then hooked on some larger dinosaur hooks to the bottom to give it more substance. (I’d been wanting to mod-podge these babies for some time now and this project gave me the exact excuse I’d been waiting for. They came from Ollie’s if anyone is interested.)
I attached long ribbons to the back of the hooks and placed mini-clothespins on the ribbons.
Here is the completed board holding his artwork and looking oh-so-cute!
The next Kids Workshop is scheduled for September 5th and the project will be a Bean Bag Toss—just in time for all your Harvest and Halloween party planning. I highly recommend checking it out if you have a kiddo between the ages of 5-12. Enjoy!
