At the end of 2009, I did a similar post reviewing the trends in Home Blogs. I thought I’d make it an annual thing. Here are the trends I noticed (and some I participated in) this year:
1. Board & Batten I declare that it is a rite of passage for bloggers at this point. You’re not a real blogger until you have used a faux board and batten treatment somewhere in your house! Okay…so that’s a gross overstatement…but this trend is still going strong so look for more of it in 2011.
2. Bookpage and/or Coffee Filter Wreath Can you believe that I didn’t make either one of these this year? Neither can I! But I think I was the only one.
3. French Script Who in the world knows what all those words on our pillows, curtains, and reupholstered seat cushions say? It’s French! And it looks fabulous. Enough said.
4. Blues and Grays The words “lighter and brighter” could be found in approximately 82.7% of all blog posts this year. And many of us achieved that sought after lighter and brighter look by using blue and gray paints and accessories unless of course we instead achieved it by…..
5. White Worship Some blogs this year were fully devoted to nothing more than gorgeous, minimalistic whites. Whitewashed floors, walls, comforters, plates, kitchens, dressers, etc. with earthy textured accessories could be found in abundance this year.
6. White Slipcovers Okay, so really this is just another form of white worship, but the trend seemed so big this year that it demanded it’s own number.
7. Farm Obsession Reclaimed barn wood, galvanized tins & bins, chicken wire baskets, old milk crates, distressed wood, vintage market signs that say fresh berries, eggs, etc. If it looks like old junk from a farm, we were ga-ga over it! I think this will continue into next year.
8. Numbers On pillows, canisters, stairs, mason jars, walls, tags, baskets, younameit…we like things numbered!
9. Starburst Mirrors Not to be outdone by the bookpage wreaths, the make-your-own starburst mirrors were hot this year. I somehow missed out on this trend as well. Think it will still be hot in 2011?
Some of the trends of 2009 were still hot this year, but I wanted to highlight the new ones. (Check my 2009 post for those trends.) So what have I missed? Any 2010 trend that should be added to the list? What do you think will carry over to 2011? What new trends are in store for us? Talk to me!
I am frustrated blogger.. thanks for
sharing all your insights..
Great list! What's funny is that I've loved a lot of those things (white and farm inspired) since before I was a blogger…I guess I entered the bloggy world at the right time!
I think you should add quatrefoil patterns to the list…you know, those crazy trellis-ish patterned fabrics and walls and rugs.
I must be before my time…greys and blues have been a staple in my home for a long time. I am thinking about a book wreath for the new year, and a starburst mirror for the update to my daugther's room.
White attacked my kitchen a few years back…and this year it will meet black, so I am still going against the trends. Eh – I have always been that way, so it's nothing new.
Perhaps the trend that I should be doing is to take my blog out of park this year. If for nothing more than to journal my projects, changes and family for myself.
Happy New Year Beth!! Your blog has brought me so much inspiration and joyful reading!
My head may explode….just kidding…I am going to try new things….because I am woman hear me roar !!!
Happy New Year Beth,
Kathy 🙂
Hi all! I'm originally from London but am living in Berlin at the moment.
Gotta like this forum!

Great recap Beth and I sure am glad I have board and batten in my home! Thanks for the recap!
Laura
Wow, Beth, what a great recap. I didn't do most of the things here but I really wanted to!
Checked out last year's recap and am glad to see that most of them are still around, and especially vinyl lettering 😉
Don't forget to include the "Keep Calm and Carry On" phrase that is used on everything!! Not my style, but it definitely got a lot of attention this year!
Great list!!
Great take on things, Beth. I did 4 of them: b&b, white slipcovers, some white accessories and drapes (but not walls) and I always use farm stuff. I love blues but I have trouble with gray (always have.) Looking forward to seeing what pops up in 2011.
I am really liking all the white interiors, though don't know where I'd fit it into my house…it would probably end up looking like a builder grade room no one had touched!
All the best in 2011 Beth!
Janell
Is Drop Cloth Curtains from this year of last year?
So true! I've seen most of these items multiple times on a variety of blogs!! Too funny.

You put together a great list, Beth. Two houses ago I lived in a log cabin and we put bead board (that's what I called it) on the ceilings. I did make a starburst mirror !
Great post! I checked out last years list too. I think chalkboard paint will stick around this year.
Londen
I covered chalkboard paint, mercury glass, burlap, canvas, birds' nests, vinyl, apothecary jars/cloches, moss, etc. in my 2009 post so I didn't mention any of those this time around!
Anything in & under glass…the cloche was everywhere. Heavy on the chalkboards too. Loved your list.
Oh yes, I did a few of these this year, Beth! The white slipcover to update my overscaled floral sofa in my living room was at the beginning of the year. I have to say that almost a year later and I still love it! I didn't do a coffee filter or book page wreath either ~ I'd like to, but just would forget about it. I may give the book page one a try in the coming weeks. Numbers, monograms and French writing ~ ditto on that, too!
I think I did 4 out of 10. Bookpage wreath, starbust mirrors, numbered anything and white of course. What does that make me? A trendy wannabee?
I agree with all of these – luckily I love all of these styles too so I am glad that it is carrying on into the new year.
Some other trends I noticed were vintage oil paintings and test tubes used as vases!
Years from now, when archeologists are digging through our rubble. They will say – this was an odd civilization- they poured their coffee through large styrofoam circles, bleached all of their wood, numbered their nick knacks and had foul language written on all their curtains and pillows. Strange beasts those bloggers….. fascinating, but strange…
I haven't made a book page wreath or a coffee filter wreath either. Oh well. haha! I think you made a great list here. So spot on!
Great list! It's so fun to see all of the trends in pictures all together! Was it just me, or were Ikat prints everywhere too?!
Beth! I love how the trends take flight in the blogging community! You have been such an inspiration and support to me. I entered my daughter's home on Christmas Eve and found her interpretation of the Trader Joe's subway art! That's how your creative spirit has sparked another's spirit thousands of miles away! Happy New Year to you and your family! *L*
What a great list! I've been seeing a lot of all of the things on here! I saw a lot of chalkboards too…also on your blog. Loved all of the chalked creations I saw! Wonderful observations here!! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Beth! =D
Hi,
This is a great post! I do love the slipcovers and have made many of them. I also love the white rooms, but crave a little color.
I read where gingham was coming back. I'm not sure how though? But, I think plaid is going to make a come back. The Ralph Lauren look? I love the plaid flanel/wool blankets and throws and pillows. I think I'm going to bring a little of that into my home. Maybe in some blues, taupes, and beiges.
Thanks for taking the time to do this post.
Kelly
Beth,I do believe you hit them all. Looking over this list, I think I'm out of style, since I really didn't do much of it at all. I have one white slipcver on a chair & ottoman, a little bit of blue/aqua paint, not so much gray. No coffee filter wreath, although I've got a huge amount of coffee filters that I bought at a yardsale that won't fit our coffee maker, so now what do I do with them? ha! i love the B&B, but not sure I'll do it here.
Good post though & so true!
Wall vinyl! It is everywhere these days.
Right on! I love all the things you featured and I think I'm at the tail end of the trends…just now doing board and batten and made my first bookpage wreath at Christmas.
I am planning on a mirror for 2011!
Thanks for the recap! You are brilliant!
Beth, There are homes on my favorite blogs that I do love but I would not choose for myself. It's still inspiring to see these designs. I think you hit the nail on the head for 2010.
Hugs,
Sherry
I hope the "light and bright" carries over… I love it, and we repainted our LR and DR swiss coffee white.
Great post – I didn't do the wreath thing either – LOL
I love the board and batten – we have it in our new house dining room, love the blues/greys – I do think that will continue, I also agree with someone who said yellow. I think the craft/organization/mom's room will continue to be big this year as people try to find a place for their "stuff". Decorating with cloches will continue to be big – in all shapes and sizes, also quatrefoil used in designs – mirrors, fabric, wallpaper, etc… and embellishments in clothing and home – e.g. broches/flower pins, etc…
This was a super fun post to read! Thank you for putting it together for us.
Those bunting things were EVERYWHERE. I don't get it. They look like the things that fly over a used car lot. To each his own I guess!
I enjoyed when you did this list last year, thanks again for another fun list! It is going to be fun to see what 2011 brings!
Happy Holidays 🙂
Wendy
You have nailed it my dear. I have done almost all of these lovely trends. I too think grey and yellow are going to make a surge. I saw it coming in 2009….so I think it will make it's way to blog world. I can not wait to see what 2011 has in store!
Those are all great trends and I think I've done all of them. Ha, just kidding, but a lot of them!
I predict gray and yellow to be hot in 2011. Why? Because I love it! 🙂 I really can't get enough of gray now though. I know it makes you depressed, but I'm really liking it as a neutral.
I've almost fallen prey to the all white kitchen…but I just can't. It is beautiful whenever I see it, but I'm lazy and just won't clean it. Boo.
I think the B&B will stick around and any type of wainscoting for that matter. It's timeless and I love it!
Maybe faux walls will be in style next year? I kid, I kid.
Ok, this comment is entirely too long. I'm out.
Love you!
Beth you nailed them! Everyone! I've always loved the board & batten. Still not brave enough and comfy enough with the tools to do it. Happy New Year! Marie

(new design, thank God!)
yes! great list.
i just tweeted today that i think this was the year for a staircase revamp as well. tons out there in blogland.
the bookpage/filter wreaths are everywhere. i have yet to make one for myself.
i like white, but not as much as most of the bloggers. i gotta have some color in my life!
great review of 2010!
I agree. This is my first year of blogging and that is what you see everywhere. Funny thing is, while I love it all, it is not my style. I do love board and batten though. I really love everything but I just go with what works in my house. Great list.
