Rugs are a fantastic accessory and often pull together an entire room design. However, rugs are just plain expensive! It’s no wonder that many savvy DIY bloggers are turning to cheap rugs (a.k.a. Ikea or thrift store finds), stencils, painter’s tape, paint, creativity, and patience to create their own painted rugs. I soon plan on joining the masses and painting my own Ikea rug. (It’s sitting in my laundry room closet just waiting for inspiration to hit!) To get myself motivated to paint, I thought I’d share with you a collection of 17 different rugs to make! Enjoy.

What kind of paint did you use on the canvas rugs
I used latex paint with fabric medium mixed in.
What a stuff of un-ambiguity and preserveness of valuable experience
on the topic of unexpected feelings.
I love the idea of a painted rug, but I am a little hesitant with two big dogs in the house… I am wondering if anyone has had to clean one yet?
I love the one that is painted on the mats! I’ve never seen mats so pretty before, and it’s a great idea in a child’s room!
love this post!!! So many awesome ways to afford gorgeousness!
Now. who can I hire to do my D.I.Y.???? 🙂
These are awesome! I’ve always painted my rug directly onto the floor (perk? to having ugly flooring) but I’d love to try this sometime. Great inspiration!
Great bunch of inspiration! I’m getting ready to paint a rug too!
I’m fairly certain I’m going to paint a drop cloth to use as a rug in my bedroom pretty soon. I just have to get the supplies & go at it. I’ll attach it to a rug pad to make it more rug-y & not so drop-cloth-y. I’m hopefully that it will turn out! These are all so pretty, I’m not sure yet what kind of design I’m going to do. Likely either some kind of pattern stencil or strips.
Beth, what a great collection of painted rugs! You surprised me when I saw mine. BTW, it has held up great, but it is on our porch and doesn’t get daily boy traffic 😉
Love the lime moroccan one…One question, Beth…when you paint a rug, does it have to be more of a natural texture (bamboo, sisal, etc) or can you actually do this to a comfy, cozy fabric rug? I want a rug for my little girl’s room that’s not just great to look at too but feels great too.
I would only paint a rug with a flat pile (meaning not a comfy one). Painting fabric makes it stiff and a cushy rug would feel like a mess under your feet once painted.
I am going to paint a rug soon. My sister im law, who is an artist, told me to add fabric medium to my paint to keep it soft so it will be comfortable to walk on. Can’t wait to try it and see how it works!
Hi Sherri, I would love to know how you went with keeping the feel of a nice rug. Did the fabric medium work?
Thanks for including my rug, Beth! I’ve got another rug painting project in the works, so it’s nice to see all this inspiration in one spot! My rug has held up well, but it’s in a low-traffic area. My next project will be a real test of durability.
I could have used this tutorial 2 weeks ago when I painted a rug directly onto my front porch landing!
Beth, I visit your blog daily and wanted to let you know that you have been an inspiration in helping me launch my own blog (which I launched yesterday!) I did document my step-by-step of my painted porch rug and hope to post it sometime next week.
Linda.
What a beautiful collection of rugs! I’ll need to try my hand at one sometime.
Love that one by Charm Home Design, too, and the one by Diddle Dumpling..wish they were both in my house!
These are wonderful, each and every one! My favs are the ones from tatertots & jello and Charm Home Design. Great job to all the DIY girls!
I wouldn’t be able to pick ONE favorite…all are fabulous. Love the last one the porch with the white furniture, the florals near the top, they’re all great. I want a rug on my front porch and had almost decided to just paint it on the wood. I might do a painted rug instead. Oh, love the numbered rug also.
what a great post…I love rugs but not how much they cost…especially with 2 toddlers. I pretty much love all of the ones you’ve chosen,,,I can’t believe some of them are painted. Thanks for these great ideas!
