Solving Design Dilemmas Through Facebook

I’m not sure why I waited so long to do it, but now that I have, I so wish I would have done it earlier!  Having a facebook page for my site allows me to interact with you all much more efficiently than email alone.  If you’re not doing so already, I invite you to follow along by “liking” me here.

One of the things I love most is that my friends will post a design dilemma on my wall for all to weigh in on.  Okay, typically, I’m the only one who weighs in, but I enjoy the challenge!  So here’s what you’ve been missing out on so far…

Friend Dilemma:

Hey, Beth. Where can i get cool, affordable wallpaper? I have a cozy, shared living room/dining room space in my apartment. I am looking for something just for one wall in the dining room side, above a chair rail. Something moderny-vintage and somewhat neutral yet dramatic.

Suggested Solutions:
First check out some of these gorgeous inspirations and let me know what you like:

Friend:

I like (number 3) the best.

Me:

Okay, the cheapest (not easiest) way to achieve the look I think you’re going for is to paint the surface of your wall in the color you want. Then buy some luminescence paint (Valspar carries one) and have it tinted a hair darker and stencil over your wall.

Friend:

I think I love this…. (Price $49)

Me:
Ooooo, so cute! Here’s one (not quite as elaborate but way cheaper and you pick the colors.)
Price $18!!!!

Friend:
Thats the One. Thanks, lady!

Sigh. My work here is done… Next dilemma!

Friend (really little sister) Dilemma:

A2Z Peeps! What suggestions do you have for a hallway overhead light that is so close to the attic stairs, there’s only room for a bare bulb?

Suggested Solutions:

Have your hubs replace it with a pendant light like this one from Ikea which is only $14.99,

…or simply find a clip on shade that you like which will need to be removed when climbing up to the attic.  Here’s a cute on from Pottery Barn for $29.99.

Little Sis:

That IS cute! Thanks! They come off easy?

Me:
I’m assuming they come off just as easy as any clip on shade. Just pull it off. It doesn’t screw onto anything. BTW–did you not have faith in your big sis? Did you think you needed my peeps for this one???

Sis:
lol – I’m just helping you build an online community!

Okay…one more dilemma!

Friend Dilemma:

I inherited 12 1’x1′ cork squares. I want to do something with them on an upstairs wall to put up Christmas card pictures and who knows what else. Ideas??

Suggested Solution:
My big sis was going to do a cork board tile border (chair rail height) around her daughter’s room framed out in trim. I thought that would be so cute in a playroom with kid’s artwork displayed.

I love the creative and problem solving challenges presented by design and decorating, don’t you?  Yep.  You do!  So, I hope you’ll join in on future facebook design-dilemma-conversations!

(And if you’re wondering why in the world some items in this post are brown, some are in one font, some in another, some centered, some not, it is because Blogger hates me.  That’s why.  The end.)

  1. Susan, everything okay? Perhaps I'm reading into your comments since it's hard to hear tone through the written word, but your two comments you've left today seem defensive. Email me to chat.

  2. I am a FB follower and love the very thing you've talked of in this post! Love your ideas and the way others are bouncing their thoughts around. Such fun 🙂

  3. Are you taking on all dilemmas? I have a question about lamp shades. Do all 5 shades in my living room need to be the same color? I can't find an answer to this one.

  4. Little sis, I'm glad to know that Blogger doesn't discriminate. I was beginning to get a complex. Domestic Fox, feel free to post your dilemma!

  5. LOL…apparently I am FB challenged – I have never looked at your FB wall. But what a GREAT idea!!! I think I might have to pick your brain one day and see what you think. I seem to be design challenged – reading all of the lovely blogs that I find really inspires me to be creative in my home, not just in my art studio.
