Looking to add some character to your home? I have some great ideas for you in this post that can be completed in a weekend!
Small home improvement projects, that 1-2 people can typically start and complete in a single weekend, are perfect for quickly adding character and charm to your home. Let me show you some of the DIY projects we have completed in our home that have elevated the space without breaking the bank! 1. DIY Faux Wood Beam
We installed a beam in between our kitchen and great room to help divide the rooms and set the kitchen apart from the great room. This “faux” beam is built using two boards to give the appearance of a full beam. This is a nice building trick when you have different ceiling heights. We were able to build, stain, and install the beam and corbels over a weekend. I absolutely LOVE how this turned out!
2. DIY Kitchen Hood Tutorial
We wanted to update our kitchen hood and go with a more modern, sleek look. We were able to use scrap wood to accomplish this DIY. Click the title link for the full tutorial!
3. How to Build Shelves the Easy Way – Open Shelving Tutorial
Adding open shelves to a wall creates a beautiful focal point to any room! Open shelves are fun to decorate with the change of seasons and are an incredibly affordable DIY build. You can find all of my breakfast room looks here.
4. How to Shiplap a Wall
We installed wood planks on two of our walls in the breakfast room, and it adds so much character to the entire space. The time spent on your project will largely be determined by the size of your room and walls. For an average-sized room, this project can be completed in a weekend!
Stay tuned for an additional update to this room coming soon!
5. How to Build a Box Beam Mantel
This project is great if you want to update your existing mantel, or if you want to add a mantel where none existed beforehand. I created this box beam mantel on the screen porch makeover for a lovely family.
6. How to Build Bathroom Shelves
We added shelves to the side of our shower in our last major bathroom remodel. The entire bathroom remodel was an extensive project, but the shelves themselves took no time at all to install. You could use this tutorial to replace (or cover up) metal-rack shelving as well.
7. How to Cover a Popcorn Ceiling
We had a popcorn ceiling in our media room, and we were able to cover it up using these planks! This was a gorgeous renovation that did take some time and effort, but the overall installation could be completed in a weekend; however, this project was on the pricier side. The end product is so beautiful that the splurge is sometimes worth it!
8. Add Beadboard to Walls
Adding beadboard to walls makes any room more glam! Beadboard is especially pretty in smaller spaces where you want to add some depth and texture without adding bulk.
9. Fireplace and Mantel Makeover
We added stone on top of our existing tile, and swapped out the original mantel for a beam mantel.
10. Board and Batten Trim Installation
Board and Batten in a mudroom area is always a perfect and natural way to hang hooks. It’s an easy install that can be done in a weekend!
